Still having pains in my chest-3 months now.

Hi everyone,

Here is an update on where I am now. I had a gastroscopy, which was clear, and also saw a Cardiac Doctor, who also could find no problem with my heart, but ordered an Echocardiogram, which unfortunately because of the current virus problem has been postponed. i still have chest pain since mid January, and it is no better. It hurts when I sneeze or cough, stretch, and also uncomfortable at night. I have changed my Omeprazole to Lansoprazole to see if this makes any difference, and apart from the fact I don't now have palpitations it doesn't change the chest pain problem. I am pretty convinced it must be tablet related, and plan to stop taking Alendronic Acid, which I have been taking once a week for nearly three years now, as on the paperwork one of its side effects is chest pain. At my last bone scan in January my bones were pretty good, and the Rheumy Doctor said she did not want me to take them for too much longer as they can cause problems. Has any one else had problems of this nature with Alendronic Acid? On the Prednisolone front I am down to 3mg using the slow method over several months, and apart from stiffness in my knees when I sit for a long time, I have no other pain. Any advise welcome.

I know I read something, could have been a post on another forum, recently about chest pain being due to AA - and since it isn't essential at this sort of dose (I don't think it is essential for everyone at any dose but that is something else) and you can stop it without any trouble it would be an excellent thing to try,

It didn't exactly give me chest pain but did make me, who has never had a cough in her life, wheeze alarmingly. I stopped after fewer than six doses and Calceos saw me through eight years of Pred with my bone density rated as "amazing for your age" by the surgeon who did my hip replacement.

Your rheumatologist is being intelligent. Three years really is the maximum time anyone should be on a bisphosphonate as the bones are now being built on an increasingly ageing matrix and may become more brittle, which of course defeats the purpose of having been on the medication in the first place. You'll have achieved the most benefit from the med by now. You can carry on improving your bone strength through appropriate load bearing exercise (like walking!) and a good, varied diet, and a few judicious supplements including Vitamin K2 (not K1) provided you are not taking a warfarin-type blood thinner.

Thanks everyone, I won't be using it any more, but will let you know if it makes a difference. I am on Calceos twice a day anyway, so don't think I need both, and it is certainly worth a try.

I too experienced chest pain which was undiagnosed via endoscopy, ECG, chest sprays etc. This pain started Nov 2018 and I still am working on rectifying it via exercise.

When I started deep massage therapy in the summer of 2019, the masseuse said it was most likely due to some of my ribcage being a bit out of alignment. This made sense as the pain was awful on deep breathing, sneezing etc and since I have been trying some exercises it has gotten much better, but not all gone yet. I am 71 male so I guess these things take time and patience to correct.

I was surprised to read your post as it seemed like I was the only one with that symptom.

just wanted to share my experience with you.

good luck as I know it is very frustrating
