24 days since my lthr and lack of sleep is becoming a problem. I went to the doctor today and he gave me some sleeping tablets which I'm a bit wary of using, anyone else used sleeping tablets to help them?

    Hi nezi

sleep is so important to the healing process that I think you should take them for a short time. Sometimes it's just a case of getting into a sleeping pattern. Sleeping tables aren't like they used to be. They will not be addictive in the short term.

I did resort to them and feel much better for it. Don't need them now. (4 1/2weeks post op.).

Having said that I am having an "off" night tonight, hence I'm here.

I think it's because I went to have a nap this afternoon  and a fiend turned up, lovely to see her but I think I got over tired. I often sleep better at night if I have a nap in the afternoon - would have thought it would work the other way round!

others may not agree, but that's my experience

    good luck😄😴😴😴😴😴😴😴💤💤💤💤💤💤💤💤

    all the best

    Carol😄 Xx

      Hi Carol,

That's funny, because I can always sleep better at night if I have a doze after lunch (and sometimes in the evening!). People think I'm strange. It's nice to know I'm not the only one!

My sleep pattern has gone to pot again after my 'blip' of last week. Don't like it!

Well I gave in as I'm shattered and took one so here's hoping I get to sleep soon, can't go on like this much longer, this is the only problem I have had so far in my recovery.

    Hi Nezi,

So sorry to hear about your sleep problem ...

Is it because you have to sleep on your back, are in pain, worry or just can't fall asleep ?

I hope the sleeping pill helped you to get some hours of uniterrupted sleep ... sometimes it might also help to not stay too focussed and getting upset about not being able to sleep - It is exhausitng -

be gentle with your self ...

    big hug

Oh Nezi ... it sucks doesn't it - there is so much pressure you put on you self though - your mind and the voices in your head ... beating your self up for not being able to fall asleep ... it is easy for me to tell you to relax, chill out - and no, it is not your fault - I wish I had a magic wand -

I don't know if listening to relaxation or sleep tapes are of interest to you ... you find them on you tube ... give it a try -

are you able to take naps during the day ?

No I haven't, but I'm tempted. I am 3 weeks today RTHR and very restless. Since I stopped the pain medication which was helping me sleep I can't relax as much. Today, flaked out on couch for 2 hours........hoping it will sort itself.

I don't like the feeling of exhaustion in the day but looks like I've got to get used to it😕

Hi Nezi, I hope this technique I have typed up will help.

To meditate you have to still the mind, and that in itself is an exercise.

I begin by breathing in through the nose and out through the mouth.

You have to keep the body still, if you move, then you have got it wrong.

Once you have stopped moving, and thinking, and are just breathing, then begin to count back from fifty.

Remember it is an exercise, and as such, it is hard work and requires practice.

To think about  anything else except the numbers as you count backwards, from fifty means that you have again got it wrong, and have to start again.

This is a meditation exercise and lying down horizontally, once you have tried it a few times, it will put you to sleep.

When done as a relaxation technique, in a seated position, you then concentrate on moving the breaths down through your body, first through the throat, then down through the chest and then into your belly button, you will begin to breath from the stomach and not from the throat. You will then reach a mindful state of alertness, a sort of stillness, it is that moment between a movement and being totally still, and very aware of the things around you, the different sounds of the world around you, and anyone watching you, will think that you are asleep, however you are totally alert and sensitive to the sounds that you are hearing.

If you move, when in this self induced hypnotic state, then you have got it wrong and have to start again.

Remember it is an exercise, and as such, it is hard work and requires practice.

I use this technique at work when I need to recharge my body as there are times when on nights that you can get so very tired, and people think you are having a 'Power Nap'.

You are not asleep at all but in a state of increased awareness, but keeping still, that is the hard part, keeping still and getting it right, as once you move you have got it wrong and have to start again.

I have used this method for years and hope you will try it, message me for any help or ideas that you may have about it.

Thanks for the replies, got about an hour of sleep this afternoon, might try the warm milky drink before bed, i think i've got some horlicks in the cupboard so will try that. I will also take the sleeping tablet about an hour before my  bedtime and hopefully just fall asleep and if not i will try some of Iain's breathing/meditation excercises.
