Hello chick, thanks for your reply. I wasn't expecting it to take this long to be out of pain and walking again. I've just been for a good walk at baggeridge park, I had to use my crutch and had to walk very slowly. I tried doing the lying on side and lifting operated leg, but that seems to have made my hip ache more. I don't seem to be able to build my glutes back up no matter how hard I try. Warmest wishes Julia. Xx

I would bring these concerns to the attention of your surgeon, as he will be able to allay any fears about serious problems. In my area of the US, we have a 6-week post-op appointment at the OS's office. Are you still taking pain meds? Some people need them for quite awhile post-op. It can also take time to get over a limp.

HI Julia! I had a lthr as well as a fracture repair. At 9 weeks, I suddenly regained strength and the drive to walk without gripping onto the walker. What helped me was holding onto the walker with the opposite hand from the  operated leg. I practiced walking, only gliding the walker in front for balance. I do this several times a day. Now the walker has become almost a trip hazard! Hopefully, I'll be able to lose it when I see my surgeon this week. Ask your Dr. If you can do this. It really helped me. Cindy

    Hi Julia,

I am with AnnieK here - when is your follow up appointment?

If the pain that you are experiencing keeps you from walking then maybe it needs to be looked at -

I forgot, but do you see a physical therapist? You can find great video's on you tube, and it would be great if someone watches you and how you walk -

It just takes time and patience and tender loving care - stop harassing yourself darling - if an exercise hurts, don't do it -

THERE IS NO GAIN IN PAIN AFTER THR  (remember that) -

I know this is challenging for you, heck for all of us - some of us more than others - there are days that i am okay with where I am, and a couple of days later I think I will never ever walk normal ever !!!!!!!

not always a pleasant flow, but hey, just go with it okay?

you are dloing great ... I mean, fitting in to your skinny jeans at 5 weeks post-op???

    big warm hug

Hello Julia. Sorry to hear you are still in pain. At 11 weeks, I can relate to the pain, weak gluteus and waddling. Last week my physio had me switch from using a crutch to using a cane full time in and out of the house so I can practice walking straight. I am doing only glute strengthening exercises 3x a day and massaging the glute area every other day. Also walking daily. My legs felt like rubber yesterday at start of the walk but better by the time we finished. I also read an interesting article on glute strengthening where it says to exercise the glutes to the point of success not failure. The message was that if we over exercise and end up having body being in too much pain then the glutes actually get inhibited. A key seems to be balancing pain control so that the glutes will be more responsive to activate and get stronger. I am hopeless at cutting and pasting so will try and get article reference in another posting.

    Take Care,

    Cathy

Hello everyone, thank you for your replies, much appreciated. I'm worried about the pain in my outer hip when I try to walk, have had to go back to using cane in the house because I'm not able to put much weight on the operated side. I think I've pulled a muscle trying to do the exercises. I hope I haven't caused too much damage, but it's been a few days now and it doesn't seem to be getting any better. Thank you again for your replies, warmest wishes Julia. Xxx

    Hi Julia:

I would echo what others are saying including taking pain meds, perhaps before you do the exercises or walking so that the pain is under control or more manageable. Massaging the area or a heating pad may also relieve the pain somewhat. Seeing the physio and surgeon to check things out may also help to guide you and at least address your worries. It can be hard to know what to do.

    Take Care,

    Cathy
