Still in pain after a year and1/2

Hi everyone,

I'm still in pain after a year plus I always hear everyone talk about how well they are doing, I'm happy for all my fellow hip replacement friends. I went back to the doctor on several occasions and he said everything is well, but I'm still hopping, is there any one out there that can tell me what I need to do to get rid of the pain?

I have days when my leg feel okay but must of the time I'm in pain at the end of my work day.

OK so your doctor is happy with the hip surgery so it is a game of elimination. your will have been walking badly prior to the surgery and very likely after surgery and will have been very badly pulled about during surgery. There is therefore every chance that your back is out of kilter so recommend that you see a chiropractor. They should be able to tell if it is your back and if so sort it out. If your back is not the issue at least you will be one step closer to solving what is wrong. Take it step at a time. Good luck, Richard

    Hi Hippy54,

i really feel for you as im only 2 1\2 weeks since i broke my hip and sitting here thinking will i ever get better. I was disabled before the fall with very limited mobility and thought i was doing well until yesterday when my inner thigh started to really hurt and i noticed bruising which scared the hell out of me. You are still in pain after this long time but if your Dr has said everything is ok im sure it is. We all recover at a different pace. Im trying my hardest not to give up but i worry a lot as wonder if the inner thigh pain is normal and to be honest my Dr is useless. Also yesterday i was told my Son has Cancer so im going through a really dark place at the moment.

I wish you good luck and hope your pain stops soon .

Hi Mandie - I don't know you but I was so moved by your post. I'm so sorry to hear about your son. Please don't give up hope - my brother was diagnosed with cancer last spring and he is just fine now. I'm sending this little message to you with love and hope that you will begin to see some light. Take care of yourself.

Hi having not had my replacement yet I'm probably not the best to give advice, but I do know from my physio therapy sessions and hydro that it's all about building those muscles up to be as strong as they can possibly be before and after

Are you still doing your exercises that you did after the initial hip replacement

People don't realise just how important they are because it's not the hip joint that allows you to walk it's the big muscles round it, without them you will not be able to walk properly at all, ask your doctor if you can be referred to a leg clinic or a hydrotherapy group

If you need to use a stick for a time till you get it working with a proper gait, do you have a leg length discrepancy do you know

Good point to remind about building muscle but I would ask everyone having a hip replacement. to always use TWO crutches until you are walkingbwith a good strong even gait at which time you can toss both and just get on with walking. One crutch will tend to make you walk in an uneven way abs can easily result in back damage. Cheers, Richard

Hi. I had a full hip replacement on my right side about a year and a half ago and still does not feel right. When I'm standing, if I move a certain way, it is like a pulling sensation and sometimes when walking it hurts. Hard to describe. I have had an MRI and told everything looks good. My left hip will need to be replaced at some point but told it is not bad enough yet. MRI shows mild to moderate arthritis in my left. So, I have pain in both often times...mostly after sitting, when I stand or after doing my chores (I board horses), shoveling snow, and at night it sometimes throbs in my leg and butt and travels down to my foot. I have had PT with minimal results but told to keep doing exercises as need to strengthen my core and leg muscles...Hard to get motivated to exercise when you hurt though! I am going to check out a chiropractor and see how that goes. Never been to one.

Yes do see a chiropractor and if possible not a McTimoney trained one to get the best results. Cheers, Richard

Where is the pain located. How long does it last? I still have post-op knee pain from my hip. It has been 2.5 months. FRUSTRATED

in had quite a bit of pain for a long time. I am 1.5 years post op. To my surprise, all of my pain was soft tissue related. A good massage ball helps a ton. Pain from your glute medius can refer all the way to the knee, and surprisingly, groin and inside thigh pain can actually be coming from your hamstrings. Get a good massage therapist to poke at all you muscles around there.. you may find it reproduces similar pain.

If you pain is in fact muscular, it could be trigger points. Which means your muscles could still be weak or poorly conditioned (this happens after surgery, or from years of limited ROM. Massage and special exercise will help, as will IMS (dry needling). Trigger points are often somewhat intractable... meaning they can frequently come back... but they lessen over time. just some thoughts for you.

I still get pain now and then... but find it is less and less as I strengthen and release (via self massage and gentle stretching) the muscles... especially the glute medius and hamstring (those are the weak ones for me).

    Cheers
