Still not walking properly 9 weeks post bilateral hallux valgus surgery...is this normal?

Hi guys, I was wondering if anybody could help me please. I am 9 weeks into revovery after bilateral hallux valgus surgery. Whilst I am definitely better than I was, I am still unable to walk properly/having problems circulation and the feet turning purple/ pain after doing very little. I was hoping to go back to work next week. I work on my feet all day, so I'm just wondering if anybody has managed to go back to a standing job so soon? I feel like I'm being dramatic if I stay off any longer and I really want to get back to work asap. I know I probably sound impatient, but I would just like to hear what you guys think please! The hospital really haven't been very good in terms of after care/advice. Unfortunately it seems that this is this case with many after this kind of op. I wish all the best and thank you for advice/guidance in advance

Hi Rosina, I can empathise with you, I planned to go back to a standing job after 8 weeks but my foot was so swollen I couldn't get shoes on, and in desperation I bought about 14 pairs of shoes to try to find comfortable ones. ( I sent most of them back!) . I got an infection in the foot, caused I think by a reaction to the plate I have in it now. I had a course of antibiotics for three weeks and eventually went back to work at week twelve. I am now at week eighteen, my foot still swells but there is little pain. I still cant work my 'normal' shoes and believe it will take up to a year before I will be able to. I think, from my experience, you are just hitting the worst time in recovery. I cant understand why we aren't made aware of the recovery in a more informed, practical way, but it seems to be a well kept secret. I thought I was being soft and making a big fuss about a tiny foot operation, my opinion has had a dramatic change and my best advice to you is, bear with it, keep contact with the people on here (they will give you good advice and share their experience which helps dramatically) and be assured that it will come right, just not as quickly as we all would like. Keep smiling, Janet.

I had my bunion removed and my big toe repostiioned with pins 10 weeks ago today. I went back to work on Monday this week until 12.00 - I couldn’t have stayed any longer. My foot still swells up and I’m unable to put my toes on the floor when walking as they seem elevated somehow. I have to go back in 10 weeks as my big toe appears to be twisted!! From what I hear though swelling is normal for upto 6 months after op. Hope you’re feeling better soon xx
