Still quite a bit of pain after double hip replacement end of January

Hi, I had THR on both hips January 25th 2018.  Although, I made great strides in the first month and was back to work in 5 weeks, I have been having quite a bit of pain right below my incision.  Is this normal?  Am I still healing and that is what's causing it?

I am 57 years old and a bit overweight (about 40 lbs).  I never had a weight issue until my hips gave out and I became extremely inactive. I am trying to walk more and do more stairs etc, but am afraid to do anything too radical if I am still healing deep down at the top of my thigh.  Suggestions?

I think you probably rushed it, 5 weeks double hip replacement and you where back at work, bit soon I think and I haven't had mine yet so don't quote me, what do you do for a living if you don't mind me asking, I hope it's a desk job.

Did your surgeon give the go ahead to do that, I think you should take it easy and may be ask for some hydrotherapy

Yes, I have a desk job ( I am also part time 4 -5 hours a day).  My Dr said it was fine for me to go back as I was walking unassisted and doing stairs.  At 6 weeks I could put my socks on and tie my shoes.I just felt like I should have less and less pain and it seems to have reached a plateau.  I had anterior hip replacement and my Dr is so in demand (he also teaches the procedure) that I felt confident in his expertise.  He is Dr Shawn Palmer out of Chicago area.  He has an office about 6 blocks from my house.

I am probably just an over acheiver that feels like I should be whipping along with my progress like I did in the first couple of months!  Thanks for some reassurance on the healing question.

    Hi Donna,

You are definitely still healing and will continue to through the rest of this year. It sounds as if your progress is pretty normal. Walking and using stairs are excellent, and if you have access to a pool, water exercises are very helpful (as long as you follow your restrictions). Has your doctor written you a prescription for physical therapy? That could also be helpful.

I had my surgery a month later than you and I am still somewhat tender around/below the incision. It’s improving gradually, but it requires patience. Good luck!

Thank you!  Now that Chicago is fonally getting some warm weather, I am looking forward to swimming.  I am not a runner or jogger, so swimming should be lower impact.  thanks for the reply!

Swimming is great! I think we carry on healing/improving for at least a year, probably 18 months.

      Good luck
