Still struggling after 3 years post op. Bilateral mid foot fusions

imageMy first surgery was June 30 2015. I have gone through hell and wonder if it was worth it? My feet were so bad they were taken from a size 11 to a size 8 (that is how much bone was removed) and I now own 1 pair of shoes. I have been through osteomyelitis on the right foot, external fixation cages for 3 months each foot, was in a wheelchair for over a year and I have just now begun to do some exercise machines. I have had horrible balance and my feet only have a 20 degree flexion. I was diagnosed with Charcot's Neuropathy and it has been down hill ever since. I struggle with the day to day things. I can't stand at the stove to cook, I can stand at the bathroom sink to brush my teeth or do my hair and makeup. I still use a shower chair. I have worked a full time job throughout this whole process (taking only 2 weeks off for each fusion and cage placement surgery), thankfully I had a daughter who could drive me everywhere that I needed to go. I can't walk barefoot due to the huge lump on the bottom of my feet and I was wondering if anyone else had to go through a similar situation. I have blocks at the end of my ankles and not very attractive blocks at that. I miss the person that I used to be, active, spontaneous and just an all around go-getter but it seems that those days are over. I have a wonderful man in my life whom I met while in the wheelchair and he is very supportive as is my kids and friends. I wonder if it will get any better than this or should I just have had them amputated? imageimage

    hi Cathleen

My heart goes out to you and so sorry that you are suffering like this.

I have not heard of this condition before and mot sure where you live but i would be researching treatment on the inter net and perhaps getting another opinion.

I have just had toe fusion and in recovery still after 13 weeks but nothing like you are going through. I live in AUSTRALIA and have a great surgeon but in your situation i would be investigating further specialist opinions before contemplating amputation.

Big hug to you and do hope you can find a resolution soon. xx
