Still waiting for hip replacement.

I'm feeling a bit down, i had my pre op the middle of December and was told it would last 4 months. All the equipment was delivered about 2 weeks after, i.e. Walking aids. In my head i thought it would happen within in 4 months. I phoned the hospital yesterday to see how far up the waiting list i am and was told it won 't happen until at least May. I feel my life is on hold as i cant arrange holidays ect. This will mean another pre op. It makes you wonder why the nhs is short of money having to do the tests again and leaving all the equipment doing nothing. Has this happened to other people and how did they cope with the disappointment.

It must be very disappointing for you. unfortunately the winter medical emergency admissions tend to slow the cold surgery lists. one way it might happen quicker is to say you will take a cancellation at short notice. This happens when someone is canceled for any reason, flu high blood pressure etc, and they fill the space with someone who is prepared to go to hospital at short, sometimes less than a day, notice. As you have an in date preop until mid April and presumably that included the measurements for the correct size of replacement, it may be a way forward
Best of luck

Know exactly how you feel.... certainly wearing me down big time....Like you life is on hold. Can hardly walk, even with a stick, pain unbelievably bad, no painkillers are helping at all, so utterly fed up of living like this. Still no date, but I am in Spain, and was originally fast tracked and urgent. One seriously bad hip has now developed into one hip and two knees all requiring treatment. Thankfully I have a fantastic Husband, but so depressed by all of this. sadly I have not helped you, but at least you are aware you are not alone.Seriously hope you have a date very soon xx

HI
I know how you are feeling I was referred to as urgent in January and the Hospital said not Urgent and said i had to wait 30 weeks
I complained to the NHS and went and got a private consultation , then had to go back to the gp for stronger pain killers
I also wrote and got a copy of my x ray
I have now been referred to another hospital which is to reduce the waiting list in Scotland
I am now waiting for a phone call to go and see them as an out patient , everyday I am in more pain
I cant understand why you have been left in such a position is it not usually about 2 weeks after your pre op examination that you get the surgery
Hope you get seen soon and they get you on the road to recovery soon

That does appear to be a long time, what part of the country are you? Aware of the long waiting for Scotland and parts of Wales. As another has stated, it may be down to winter backlog for emergency beds/surgeries. Hold tight and best wishes

i'm in West Sussex. I know they have emergency cases but when you have the pre med and all the aids delivered you think it will be soon.

I had my first hip done in edinburgh royal infirmary. I am hoping to go there again as my surgeon was brilliant. The Royal Jubilee in Clydebank is a very good hospital.
Hope you get dates soon.

I think its a sad state of affairs it happened to me I was meant to be having mine in August and like you I called them to find out how far away my admission date would be as my daughter wanted to take me to Lanzarote for a couple of weeks end of September she had a villa. When I called the hospital I was told it was going to be early November? I took my holiday and called them again to find it was going to happen December, my plans for Xmas went out the window but pleased i took my holiday! Xmas was a let down as my recovery was very slow and was unable to travel. I hope you hear soon and all goes well for you Regards Cyndey

What a waste of money by the NHS. Why on earth do they give someone a pre op when they know they will miss the op date and will have to do another one? I wonder how often that happens. I had mine after 10 weeks so I was quite close to the 12 weeks maximum.

Really good news Billy. I hope you get sorted asap. My outpatient appointment was mid August and op less than six weeks later, let's hope your's is as speedy, bearing in mind, mine was peak summer holiday season my consultant was holidaying for back end August and most of September (I think he's an age where he wants to get away when the little darlings are back at school, pretty much like me!) Good luck, keep the 'hip family' posted x

I felt like that. I was worried silly the op would be cancelled the pain was so bad. Thank goodness the op went ahead as scheduled.
