Still waking up around 2am each night in pain!

This is my third week and I would say my pain is not as intense as it was the first week. I was taking up to four ibuprofen at one time and it wasn’t doing any good really and it was hurting my stomach so I stopped taking that. One day I had a bad headache so I took two Excedrin and was really surprised that the whole day I felt much pain relief on this side  that I have the shingles outbreak. So now about every seven or eight hours I take one Excedrin and 1/2 tablet of Tylenol and it seems to really help. It is the only thing that has helped me so far and I did not want to take any narcotics or anything stronger than over-the-counter pain relief. I also use the Aspercreme and aloe vera and those two things give me a little bit of relief in regard to the itching and this  and the skin sensitivity. I am taking a multivitamin every day and also omega-3‘s and two tablets of L lysine every day which helps stop the replication of this awful virus. I started taking magnesium as well because it helps me sleep and it helps with relaxing my nerves. Of course different things work for each of us 💡 absolutely no chocolate or nuts both of those are high in arginine which causes this virus to replicate more rapidly. I am trying very hard to not have any sugar and also to eat lots of fresh steamed broccoli and healthy food blueberries raspberries apples pomegranate juice blueberry juice and lots of filtered water throughout the day to help flush out the toxins from this Annoying virus. I pray for relief and healing for each of you. We just have to be patient and manage one day at a time and try to rest a lot.

    Hello Claudette,

Like you I am in my 3rd week of this awful Shingles virus.  I have been given two different type of pain killer by my Dr - neither of which has really helped, and both of which have given me awful constipation, so I am trying not to take them if I can put up with the pain.  I take a blood thinner, so I am unable to take certain tyoes of pain killers so have trusted in the GPs to give me the right thing, but I am seriously thinking of ditching these prescription drugs and trying something else that isn't so hard on my system.

I am trying to eat as healthily as I can, but didn;t know about the Chocolate or sugar being so bad - I do now and will be keeping away from both, so thank you for sharing that information.

I've had a really bad day today, I sat on the side of the bed this morning and cried like a baby with the pain and constant discomfort - I always prided myself on having a high pain threshold, but this is really getting me down now.  I cant stand for longer than 10 minutes at a time as  the side where my Shingles outbreak was worse seems to pull or drag at me and is so uncomfortable, plus the girdle of shingles round the back of my waist has now left the area numb - that is when it doesn't break out in unbearable itching.  I also get a creaping burning - searing pain that reaps round from my centre back across my side and on to my tum, it is so bad when it comes, and the only saving grace is the fact that it is intermittent and not constant. I bought some Aloe vera gel to put on my  extremely tender left side, and although cooling it doesn't seem to do much else, perhaps I should get some of the Aspercreme you mentioned and the Llysine too.

Every day when I open my eyes I hope it will have improved a little, so far it just changes every day, but improvement has yet to come - I hope we all find relief soon.

    Babs x

Sorry for my delay in responding to you. I guess I have the notifications turned off or wrong on this forum because I never got a prompt that your message was even here. Yes, I agree that the docs sure do put ALOT of faith into these meds that do so little. Lyrica and Neurontin DON'T touch shingle pain. Most of the other drugs, that DO help with the pain, turned me borderline illiterate. My brain stayed scrambled on most of them til I finally said "enough". The specialists i went to were all pill happy on every "latest greatest" drug out there, even though they didn't work for the shingles. Best thing I ever did was drop the neuro docs and let my regular M.D. treat me.

The regimen he has me on now has been working well for a while. I DON'T self-medicate because I know these opioids are dangerous if not monitored, so I have my husband give them to me when i need them. Because I have reoccurring shingles, I have to stay on 3000 mg antiviral meds every day. During the times i have an outbreak of shingles, i take Dilaudid 4 mg and Amitriptyline 25 mg. This is the only combo i've found that works over the years.

Also, i just took the new shingles vaccine "Shingrix", that was approved this past January 2018. I had my first shot on April 2nd and scheduled to go back June 2nd for my 2nd dose. It comes in 2 doses, taken 2-6 months apart. Docs are saying it has a 97% success rate, where the last vaccine only had 38% success rate. Anyone else get the vaccine yet?
