Stinging nerve ends

Posted , 5 users are following.

Previously I asked if anyone had lower leg itching, especially on the shin and quite a few of you said you experienced similar symptoms.

I'm now entering my 4th week post op and in the last few days the itching has progressed into a constant burning sensation as if my nerve ends are on fire.

The slightest touch sets it off, if it wasn't so ruddy cold at night I'd sleep, (or should I say try to sleep) with my leg outside the duvet.

Does anyone know of some thing that might ease the pain, its driving me up the wall.

Hi Joan  I don't know about you but having read some of the posts on here I recon I've got off pretty light as far as the pain stakes are concerned. My knee joint has been virtually pain free since my op, the worst discomfort was from the swelling and bruising behind the knee after my leg was stretched and straightened.

Of course the surgical stockings didn't help, they were cutting in so deep I rightly or wrongly ditched them after the second week, my PT didn't comment one way or the other when I told him.  Its only been these last few days that my lower leg has given me some stick. Not being able to get a good nights sleep has been really frustrating, maybe this is something else the doc can help me with.

I don't think it has anything to do with the amount of physical exercises I do, the tightness across my shin and in my calf is present 24/7 and is magnified significantly when I flex my foot. My PT recons the pain will gradually  reduce within the next couple of weeks, I hope hes right.

I have similar problems on my legs and ankles ( not even had my op yet ) and was given a product called "Diprobase" from our Doctor which is excellent for calming down immediately and I do not want to itch again until maybe the next day.  The product comes in a pump container and is a thick white cream which you rub well in. Worth a try.

As you Dr about putting you on gabepentin, lyrical or cymbals. All can cut nerve pain. Gabepentin is by far the cheapest so that's the usual starting point. There are some topical things others have used but that's just kicking the can down the road as it doesn't get to the real source of the pain.

As yet I've had no reason to see my GP but if this irritation continues I shall be seeing him asap.

Gabepentin sounds like serious business to me, side effects could encourage suicide, a bit drastic but I guess that's one remedy for permanent pain relief.

Some of those side effect listings are really misleading. One in a million could already be experiencing that as a pre-existing condition and the lawyers make them list it. I've known may people who have taken it and stomach upset was the worst I had heard about. For some, lyrical can be a little more of a problem but then again aspirin has side effects if you can't take it

Recently started on Gabapentin and it is helping me at present with Arthritis knee pain and Prostatitis.

Will get off all my pain killers after my ops.
