Stomach!!

I have a history of stomach ulcers. I intend to ask about enteric prednisone or injections, but my stomach is sooo sore and swollen I get short of breath.. eating ice cream helps (except I’m sure it’s packing on some extra weight)
I hope i can hold up til after the holiday, as rheum is out of town..

Linda I did read somewhere on one of the PMR discussions that eating oats before taking your steroid can help? I’m sure someone will pop up and advise you. Unfortunately I can’t eat oats as am intolerant too them.

I sympathise as it's very painful and uncomfortable. I have porridge most mornings made with oatmeal and I have just realised that I have no bloating. On the occasions when I don't have it I find I have bloating though it may be coincidence only or perhaps because I am rushing and don't have time to make porridge. I notice when I have any bread or too many carbs I am very uncomfortable. There are also some vegetables which seem to cause bloating and discomfort for me. I have cut carbs and feel so much better. I have also shed 1.5 stone which is half of the weight I put on. I don't know where the weight has gone because I still have it round my middle .....both stomach and midriff!! My face has lost the cushingoid effect and my legs no longer swell up.

Silver I have reduced the carbs drastically and following a Low GI/GL diet as before PMR diagnosis I was already pre-diabetic and don't want to come out of this illness with diabetes. I was having a substitute 'porridge' but have cut that out - along with most fruit - to cut some carbs. I'm also using a food diary to see what irritate the IBS and have identified some naughty vegetable offenders! Well done on that amazing weight loss! My weight went up a few pounds since starting on Prednisone but has remained stable since eating low GI.

It's hard enough having PMR without having to cope with other conditions and try to manage a diet to suit. I hope you manage to feel reasonably comfortable throughout. I think my weight loss has been aided in part by my reduction in Pred so not all down to my change in diet but it's encouraging.

If you are in the USA then enteric coated steroids are not available as far as I know - it seems to be a very British thing!
Did your doctor not offer "stomach protection" as they term it? If you have a history of ulcers they should have right from the start. Omeprazole is commonly used but ranitidine/Zantac does the same and is associated with fewer side effects - since omeprazole and other PPIs are high on the culprit list for causing bloating.

My doctor also prescribed Omeprazole and I feel bloated most of the time, very uncomfortable. Cut down carbs drastically but no difference.

Yes - zantac can be bought OTC. Not sure about doses - ask the pharmacist. Omeprazole has a reputation for causing bloating.
I assume you mean Naproxen? "less gastrointestinal problems" they claim - less is not none!!!!

Problems with a stomach are related to Pred and there is no release. Be Patient!!!
Good Luck
