Stomach and bowel cramps.

Hello everyone

this is my first time posting. I have started Fluoxetine four days ago and I keep getting cramping in my lower stomach and pain that comes and goes in my bowels, like a warm feeling. I have been diagnosed with IBS but I never had pains like this before. it feels like I have excess acid in my stomach and lower abdomen. after my dosage of fluoxetine runs out my stomach and abdomen starts to calm down and feel calmer. does anyone else get these symptoms. thank you.

you shouldnt be skipping days on fluoxetine unless your doctor has advised that which i doubt. what you are experiencing is most likely side effects while your body is trying to adapt to the meds.

Thank you for your reply, I want to keep taking the fluoxetine but I suffer from health anxiety. I already suffer with acid in my stomach it just seems to be making it worse. I was prescribed Ranitidine, I have started taking them today.

i have actually just started prozac again a few days ago as well. i was on it before a few years ago and it will make you worse before you get better. it will cause gut discomfort like you describe. its normal and after a few weeks you will start feeling better. for some people it can take a few months for their body to get used to it but it will be worth it. i suffer with generalized anxiety and social anxiety and when the prozac started working in the past it done wonders for me. we both have to be really patient though as it takes a lot of time to work.

yeah been getting slight headaches, bit of nausea, worse anxiety, fatigue, muscle spasms. Same things happened the last time i started Fluoxetine. I think it took a few months last time before i felt fully better.

hi robert just read ure post ,i took prozac for a number of years without hardly any problems, came off them over a ear ago because they wernt working but went so far down gp put me back on them around last christmas 1st on 20 mg up to 40 mg a month later and then the pschiatrist with much persuasion from me and my husband to 60mg.My gp advised taking omprazole( gastro resistant capsules 20mg to help with this)i aslo take pre and pro boitics which i find do help i get them off the internet from swiss biotics company.but cutting a long story short the meds arent suiting me this time round feel like smarties would be just as much help minus the side effects which have been been horrendous this time.i cant manage without the antidepressants so hoping he comes up with a better alternative.Im on my 11 months with prozac so ive given it a fair chance to work but with all the tummy problem ive had this year theres only 3 months on and off ive felt ok so i do think the meds are to blame for me but please dont let me put u off they kept me stable for a number of years.please keep in touch and let me know how things are.x

      Hello Bazza1949

      thank you for your reply.

I tried to take the prozac with omeprazole with no effect, I then tried Ranitidine, still had the burning stomach and lower abdomen. I stopped taking the prozac Sunday and the pain has almost gone. I have started back on paxil and I'm doing ok not too much increased anxiety. sounds like you have had a rollercoaster of a ride with meds like me. I was diagnosed with IBS witch I think is stress related. how your stomach now? have you tried any other meds?

hi Robert thanks for getting back to me these meds do seem to mess us up but u have no other option if u need them. we came back from mexico a week ago iwasnt to good before we went but a holiday is supposed to do u good so we went and ive not felt well since we came back,so dont know whether i picked something up while there but gps checking me for urine and stool samples also got to have a scan to cover all aspects but going back to the meds i think they cause a lot of tummy problems which seem hard to get back to normal.did u say uve gone back on paxil have u taken it before and did u have problems with it,ive only really tried prozac over the years for depression plus they added lithium low dose with it which worked well for me till i got the shakes and a lot of weight gain so came off it.Its not one they give out freely unless other things havent worked, also we went private and when ure paying u can get access to a lot more drugs.im seeing the pschiatrist on thurs so will ask his advice but dont hold out much hope of a solution going on the past times i seen him,he gave me a short course of diazapine but thats not the answer u become addicted easily i want some thing just to feel stable and not having that awful feeling of not wanting to get up in the mornings, plus this time time on the prozac have had anxiety as well which ive not had previous.please keep in touch cos people on this site will try to help u.x

I have taken paxil before but it's just the high anxiety levels when I start it again, the doctors gave me a little bit of diazepam when I get bad. it helps a little, I just need to stick at it so I can get better. It's all the lower abdomen sensations that set my anxiety sky high. every time eat.

thats not good enough surely ure gp could suggest something else, maybe a scan or something because it could be a stomach ulcer,i had some a couple of years back and had to have the camera down my throat (which is not as bad as it sounds honest and im a wimp when it comes to things like that)i was shocked i had them but anti depressants like other meds cause all sorts of stomach problems at least they could rule the ulcers out.hope u get sorted i still take pre &pro biotics and they do keep it in check most of the time.speak soon.x
