Stomach Problems

Hi All,
obviously being on pred my stomach looks as if I'm pregnant, such an odd shape on me now for a few years, however over the last month or so I'm starting to get a little irritation, acid, and lots of wind. It's an uncomfortable feeling in my stomach and of course I'm worried about it so the anxiety is making it worse!! I know most of you have probably got a swollen stomach due to pred, but do you also experience the above symptoms too?
many thanks

Odd that you should post this...I've been thinking about it myself. As soon as I started on pred in 09/16, I started to suffer lower gi distress. My gp said it wasn't the pred, that pred caused problems in the upper gi tract. However, my lower gi system is torn up...gas, cramping, etc. and I've become lactose intolerant, something new for me. I blame it solely on the pred, because I always had pretty much a cast iron stomach. And I'm hoping (planning) for it to get better once I'm off the pred.
and yes, my stomach is so out of shape (I'm kinda skinny) that it's pitiful. Fluid retention caused by pred, my gp says. So you are not alone!

I managed to lose the stomach by cutting carbs - any fat now is just normal overweight fat! Still too much of it!!!
When my PMR started I also developed what eventually turned out to be a wheat allergy - not gluten, it is something in the structure of the starch - and I can eat spelt and kamut and the sort of flour used for French bread which is different. Slow matured doughs also seem to be OK (sour dough). The local gastroenterologist was of the opinion that it was probably part of the autoimmune part of the illness. After so long not eating much in the way of carbs, when I do indulge (as I did last night at a party buffet where there wasn't a lot of choice) I certainly know about it the next day!
But whatever they are - if you develop new g/i symptoms at either end do please get it checked out with your doctor. Having PMR. being on pred, doesn't excuse you from other problems.

I eat non-wheat stuff - but I eat spelt and kamut which are ancient wheat varieties without problems. Except wind and bloating when I eat too much but that's my fault as I am 99% of the time low carb. To be honest - using a low carb approach to diet means they can't sneer "YOU don't need to be gluten-free" Low carb IS pretty much gluten-free...

There is something in wheat, not gluten, which many are sensitive to, and the symptoms are often blamed on gluten. Sorry I can't remember what it is. Maybe something called fructan? The solution is the same, avoid eating wheat. I, too, have found wheat harder to tolerate in any quantity since starting pred, but blamed it on getting out of the habit of eating carbs for many months early on in journey.
