Stomach problems or anxiety?

Hello all,

Got some problems with my stomach, but not sure if anxiety is making these worse.

In 2017 I had to go to the hospital for very similar problems as I have now. The results of that are in speech marks below. I apologise for this long post.

So looking at my diary notes for this, in November 2020 I had extreme acid reflux 14th of November, by 25th November after taking 40mg of Omperazole, I stopped taking notes, so I must have been fine.

My notes start again at 6th January, where I had to go to bed for 3 days in a row due to acid reflux, got some more Omperazole, this stopped on the 14th January.

Latest batch started at 26th January, 2/3 days having to work from bed as very sick with acid reflux.

Again put on Omperazole, this time I bought some UK Gaviscon Advanced liquid, which is supposed to be the best on the market for acid reflux.

The problem I have is mainly a dull pain under my right hand ribs, indigestion, especially after taking Gaviscon, so feel bloated. Burning up my throat and my stomach.

I Googled this in relation to anxiety and the first link said acid reflux is due to a problem with the stomach itself, so anxiety does not cause reflux.

I do however have much worse symptoms when working, even when working from home.

When I wake up, I have a harsh sore throat and then get acid there within 20 minutes, but why only at the top of my throat? Does this mean anxiety, my mind is creating phantom acid reflux?

I work in law enforcement settings and have massive worry about getting Coronavirus, more than I should. I am 32 male. I have this chart on my phone that says chance of you dying is 0.4%, yet still I worry about this every day I work. My job is 99% office based, with people who are highly likely to get Coronavirus. Therefore I can't really work from home due to sickness. My job is also physical with lifting, I am finding pain and acid increases dramatically if I bend down to pick something up recently.

I was recently called up to say the building you were at recently, there was a possible CV outbreak so work from home and wait for further instructions. I was extremely anxious, but in the end it was a false alarm. Since that happened, I worry it will happen again and I will get the same call.

I am on 10mg Propanol and wondering if I should ask my doctor to double or 4X my current dosage, would this help with the morning feeling sick? On the NHS website it says the normal dosage for anxiety should be 40mg a day, but I am only on 10mg. This has been since 2017 when I had a meltdown at work. The stomach issues started at the same time as my meltdown at work in November 2017.

I would strongly prefer not to have another camera done, but I do understand if this is needed. The time I had one, I did not have any sedation, those who have had multiple, would you suggest sedation this time? Or is it just as bad with or without sedation? It was truly horrible last time I had one.

Thank you all for reading this post, sorry if it seems I am moaning about nothing. But I am worried about my job security if I cannot work in an office. The sickness benefits at work are world class, so 6 months full pay and then 6 months half pay. However when the doctor is 2017 asked if I wanted time off, I said no, if I have time off, my anxiety would then make me feel I am a failure and can never return to work.

"Your gastroscopy showed mild oesophagitis and hiatus hernia. There was some erosions in the stomach and tiny cysts. The biopsy came back benign polyps requiring no follow up.

The biopsy from the bacteria came back positive. Therefore you need a course of antibiotics.

Ultrasound came back normal liver, pancreas, spleen, kidneys and your blood testscame back normal apart from the vitamin D was low."

Hi, you might find this surprising but I believe it can be anxiety related / induced or muscle spasm / nerves related as well. I have had this very same symptoms often, even very bitter, acidic taste in my mouth but usually only when I think I have them and I focus on them for a little while. Try to break out of it and see if its correlated in any way to your mood, notice if you feel it more when you might think you're having them, or when your mood is down (especially if you are generally worried about it and you know the symptoms that people feel normally). You probably don't have this when your mood is up or when you do something that gives you positive emotions. I often try to fight it with my brain by forcing myself to believe that I don't have anything and that I am making it up and in a couple of seconds the symptoms go away fully, or I try to redirect the pain and imagine I am feeling it somewhere else in the body. This made the chest pressure and pain behind breastbone, back, shoulders blades go away completely as it seems that your brain is inducing either muscles spasms in muscles or it triggers the nerves around that side of your body that produces the sensation of pain. So notice if that makes it go way, if it its that then its anxiety related, I know it feels very real but there's actual studies that show how you body becomes more sensitive (mentally) and then gives you these sensations or triggers some of the nerves/ muscles that make you feel this way. But please do the necessary medical investigations either way, even for your piece of mind! Please try it, its been quite a revelation for me! All the best!
