Stool Help (Sorry not the best subject)

Hi,

I have been constipated for about a year now, started taking movicol again as the doctor thinks this maybe why my stomach is swollen.

Recently on the odd time i have had a movement it comes out like a cut in half sausage so quite thin.

I was concerned this might mean a blockage in half my bowel but my colonoscopy 3 months ago was fine.

Anyone had this or know if it is normal?

    Hello Tambdy,

The solution is right on your dinner plate.

You need to keep REGULAR and ....everything will be fine. When you eat constipating foods and you don't eat enough fruits and vegetables in a day and maybe don't drink enough water...your bowels block up.What you eat obviously affects what you excrete. To keep your insides working well you can do the following:

    1. Eat 6 - 10 servings of vegetables and fruits per day. (NHS recommendation) No more beige meals! Only delicious, jewel coloured vegetables on your dinner plate.

    2. Get some exercise every day to keep things moving...whether it be walking or a sport or an exercise class.

    3. Limit or better, eliminate constipation causing foods such as white rice, cured meats which are  salty like ham, salami, hot dogs, too much meat in general, salty foods like crisps, under ripe bananas, dairy and tea until you get things under control.

    4. omit dairy products from your diet altogether if you can...or limit them and replace them with delicious almond milk.

    5. Drink plenty of water. (I have a pitcher by my computer so first thing in the morning I drink down 2 full glasses).

     6. I often take 1 tsp of natural psyllium husks (as in Fybogel)  in the afternoon in a tall glass of water.

    7. If you have particularly sluggish bowels, take 2 -3 tablets of the natural mineral magnesium citrate before bed. In the morning you will produce a foot long, soft, stool that passes in 3 seconds. And that's it, no pain, no cramping. Everything should pass easily. You will need to gauge whether to take 2 or 3 tablets of magnesium often depending on how bulky your stool was from the previous day. You should be able to eliminate everything in one fell swoop in the morning. You will learn that you need to be on top of your bowel activity.

If we all just drank plenty of water, filled our dinner plates with colourful veggies and moved our bodies more, we would be fine. Listen to your body. Lifestyle, lifestyle, lifestyle! Treat your bowels well and they will thank you. Good luck!

      Hi Robin,

Thanks for the reply it is excellent, one of my problems is i can't and never have eaten veg i really dont like it.

I drink water and lots of it as i work on the phones so drink is as much as i can.

I do have fybogel in the house should i change from movicol to fybogel?

I also thought i was having issues with dairy, i have barretts oescophagus and when i drink or eat dairey my stomach swells was not sure if it was constipation or barretts causing it.

I definetly need to be on top of my bowel movements this has gone on too long. Where casn i get the magnesium citrate from? I have never heard of it.

Oh dear....you don' t eat vegetables?... tsk tsk!

Your dinner plate should be colourful...not beige... ugh!

You must not be preparing the veggies properly to bring out their flavours and enhance them. Here are some delicious ideas that are easy:

cooked green or wax beans, brussel sprouts, spinach...rinse well and add a chunk of butter (not margarine) with a chopped up clove of garlic, salt and pepper. Sizzle over heat for 20 - 30 seconds. To DIE for!

Cut up red and green cabbage (20 seconds) and add a dollop of mayo, fresh lemon juice, onion bits (dried in a shaker), salt and pepper. Eat right away or better, let it marinate. Yum! Take it for your lunch!...but keep cooled with an ice pack and a fridge at work.

Beets: Open the jar and put on plate!  Wow!

Tomatoes and green lettuce (Iceberg may have a nice crunch but it has very little nutritional value being so 'greenless') with salad dressing on it.

That;s a start. If you eat more veggies, you will eat less bread, cereal, sugary drinks and foods in general. You will feel better and you will lose weight and you will have healthy bowels and lovely skin, shiny hair...and bright eyes.

Movicol contains sodium...which is not really good for you because it makes you retain water. Psyllium or Fybogel is the husks of the plantain.

If you increase your fruit and veggie intake you probably won't need anything for constipation. You will be able to figure it out yourself.

My daughter takes an 8 veggie salad for lunch every day. Cherry tomatoes, matchstick size carrots, celery, red pepper, red cabbage strips, a bit of red onion, garlic and lettuce. She puts the dressing in a tiny container inside the larger container of salad. She adds chicken chunks or hard boiled egg to it. Keep refrigerated until lunchtime. Your friend will be shocked...and so will you at the improvement in your health and your energy levels and mood....and bowel activity!

Breakfast of Champions: toss a handful of strawberries into a blender. Add any other fruit you like; other berries, melon, banana (ripe), apple, pear, plum etc..and even vegetables such as carrot, celery and spinach. You should have at least a cup.  Blend. Add almond milk...or cow's if you can tolerate it. Add some vanilla. Blend and drink your lovely pink smoothie! You will SKIP out of the house to work every day!

Sorry to hear you are suffering,

But take what the GP says

If you have had a colonoscopy then there cannot be much sinister going on

But if not satisfied can you not see another GP in the practice, please do not take notice of everything on here ,No body is qualified on here to dictate tell you what they do yes but it is upto you in the end.

Dont believe you will be skipping round the room because you have done as they say

it does not suit everybody smoothies salads and fruit, sure you have tried and the best person to see is your GP if not ask for a referal,so much wrong information being given out.
