Stools on PERT

Hey guys - so im on 36K Creon, supposed to take two with food and one with snacks. Since I started, ive been having massive yellow stool, literally the same symptoms as steatotorra (however you spell it). I feel great after but i have like three massive BMs in the morning. i thought creon was supposed to help normalize the stools? Any advice or anyone dealing with the same issues would be much appreciated!

Why did they prescribe Creon? There's different reasons why a person can be put on Creon but it's just a supplement. If your pancreas isn't producing enough digestive enzymes to digest the fats/carbs/proteins then Creon is used or another brand. Depending on how damaged the pancreas is, the higher the dose. Furthermore, Creon only works in the first 30 minutes after you take it, therefore if you're eating a high fat meal it's going to take longer to digest. From the sound of your symptoms your body isn't digesting fats properly and you probably need a higher dose and/or you need to lower your fat/carb intake. Those with chronic pancreatitis usually have to stick with a 20g of fat a day and 60carbs per meal especially if you're diabetic. I just had my pancreas removed and I'm still healing and they upped my Creon. I'm dependent upon it or else I won't absorb anything I eat. There's other signs if the Creon isn't working. Your hair will fall out or stop growing, you start itching everywhere (you feel like a dog with fleas, it sucks) and then you get really greasy hard to flush stools. I would talk to your pancreas specialist and up the dose. I wouldn't concern yourself with yellow stools, but if you get clay/pale color, that's when you need to get into the doctor. The clay/pale means bile isn't flowing correctly … I lived with that most my life because I was born with a rare pancreas condition. I've been through the ringer but that's my journey. Did they do a fecal EPI test on you?

Thanks Shortie- I was prescribed Creon back in March since my Lipase levels were low. Ive had problems with my pancreas for years and was just diagnosed with Type 1 a few weeks ago. What i didnt mention is I get these stools when I take more Creon then I am prescribed. I know i need to lessen the fat (Ive increased this due to my blood sugars) so I hope that will help.

So my main issue is when I take 3-4 36K Creon per meal and 1-2 per snack, this is when my stools just became massive and frequent... I guess my real question would be can you overtake Creon and somehow these side effects occur?

I am seeing my GI specialist next week but just some food for thought in the meantime.

It's a trial and error type of deal. Usually they run the fecal test to see how much Creon you really need. Even with my pancreas condition (born with two ducts that caused chronic pancreatitis), my pancreas had atrophy but my fecal test revealed my pancreas was still producing enough enzymes. Unfortunately for me, my bile would clog up my ducts and cause nothing but attacks. I never got diabetic but my pancreas specialist put me on Creon to be safe not sorry. In my experience, unless the GI specializes in the pancreas, they will not know the answers to your questions.
