stopped Fluoxetine after 5 days, awful side effects.1 week later & still ill
Posted , 49 users are following.
I was on 20mg for 5 days. On the 4th day I was completely hyper, bad dreams, sweating, uncontrollable shaking which ended in an awful panic attack which I had never had before. 2 days later after another attack I ended up in A&E and apparently its a bad reaction.
Anyway I've been off them 6 days now and not feeling much better-nausea,dreams,anxiety,sweating. After taking them for such a short time shouldn't these side effects have stopped now? Thank you

Karen & Kirsty, Just found this.....
This means that it could take up to a full week after you’ve completely stopped taking Prozac for your body to rid itself of just 50% of the fluoxetine. Based on the 2 to 7 day half-life, it can be calculated that complete systemic clearance of fluoxetine is likely to take anywhere from 11 to 38.5 days after stopping. However, just because the fluoxetine will have likely been cleared from your body in under 39 days does not mean that its metabolites will have also been excreted.
The primary metabolite of fluoxetine known as “norfluoxetine” has nearly double the half-life of fluoxetine itself – ranging from 4 to 15 days. This indicates that for complete systemic clearance of both fluoxetine and its metabolite “norfluoxetine,” it’ll take (on average) between 22 and 82.5 days. In other words, it’s likely to take between 1 and 3 months to have fully excreted Prozac and its metabolites following your final dose.
Source: http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pubmed/15597466
Variables that influence how long Prozac stays in your system
There is significant variability in the duration of how long it takes a person to fully excrete Prozac from their system. Some individuals may excrete the drug and its metabolites in around 22 days, while others may take nearly 3 months for complete systemic excretion. Differences in clearance times are usually due to variables such as: the individual taking the drug, term of administration, dosage, as well as co-ingestion of other substances.

A little better, at least I can manage not to keep going back to bed! I still feel anxiety there, something I never or rarely felt before the pills, also very tired but the I was before the pills too. My appetite is returning though so that is a good thing. Still some dizziness too. How about you, are you feeling ok? X

Hi Krista, I’ve felt what I can only describe as adrenaline rushes most of the day, rarely had them before the fluoxetine. I did have to lie down this afternoon but did get a 2nd wind, enough at least to cook a meal and watch some tv. I have some lavender oil so have used that tonight in some oil to dilute and rubbed in into my skin, it is supposed to have calming effects. The rheumatologist I saw recently is checking me for sjogrens an autoimmune condition but they have also mentioned chronic fatigue syndrome. I am hoping it is all because I lost too much weight plus the effects of the fluoxetine and hope to start feeling well again. I am eating better, hopefully that continues. It’s nice we three keep in touch 😊 hopefully we can get through this together some moral support goes a long way x

I took 10mg of Prozac for four days and just wasn’t strong enough to pull through. I stopped abruptly and have been experiencing terrible insomnia. I can only get three hours of sleep a night. I don’t do well without sleep so this is scaring me.
I didn’t think taking that for four days would do this to me. So many regrets now as this ya effected my life, husband, and family.

I know this med works differently for everyone, and for many it works well. I persevered for almost 12 weeks on 20mg then really couldn't cope with the side effects any longer. It's not been easy and the side effects of stopping have been awful , it's been just over 6 weeks and i have been having better days...so fingers crossed. Hope it gets easier for you soon Holly . Take care Xx

Hi Holly, I too struggled with this, after 4 days ended up at A&E they said to persevere so I did for 3 weeks then spoke to my doctor as the side effects were just awful, he said to come off. The recovery is slow but I am hoping they willing be out of my system soon. If you took the medication for 4 days hopefully your recovery will be quicker. I still struggle with sleeping too. Best of luck

I was on 20 mg of Prozac for 5 days and have never felt worse. I was put on it for anxiety and I would rather have a panic attack than feel this way ever again! I have been agitated, adrenaline rushes, foggy zombie brain, sweating, insomnia, nauseous, no appetite. It is absolutely awful! I hope that you start to feel better soon! I feel the same way that you do though, how could 5 days of a medicine make me feel so bad! I just keep telling myself that each day will get better and trying to stay positive! Good luck! Let me know how your feeling.

Hi Dana, Christine, and Karen!
I hope you all are having a better day. Day 4 without taking Prozac and last night I still struggled with sleep. The increased adrenaline that wakes you up is so frustrating. I will say that the foggy zombie brain has somewhat lifted today. Appetite is still gone. I am assuming it's because of the freaking rollercoaster I've been through for the last two weeks as well. I keep telling myself it's impossible to be in my system forever and that gives me hope. I also have been drinking gallooooonns of water to urinate as much of it out. I keep having to take .5 of ativan to calm myself down enough to fall asleep which I HATE doing out of fear I will have withdrawals from that. I'm at work today. I have been avoiding caffeine for over a week now to not trigger more palpitations. It's so weird because I can get my heart rate in the 80's during the day but when it's bed time, it shoots up to like 100-125. I have always been reluctant to take any medication because of course people with anxiety fear the medicine.
How are you all feeling today?
xoxo
Holly

Hi Holly,a rough day for me today. Very little sleep last night so that's had an impact on today. Really agitated, fuzzy head ,managed to carry on with what i needed to do but have felt really anxious at times. After having good days it's really disappointing to feel like i have today. Here's hoping tomorrow is a better day for us all. Take care Xx

Hi Karen,
I am so sorry you're having a rough day. Are you able to listen to anything right now? I have been listening to The Anxiety Coaches podcast here at work. It's keeping me focused on what she is saying rather than the problems around me. Someone told me recently that we can not be beholden to this disorder. We will always have good days and bad days. It's impossible to have good days everyday. We have to keep the faith. We have to float through this.

I had a bad day today, got up felt awful and went back to bed. Felt a little better as the day went on but hoping for a better one tomorrow. I knew when I woke up with adrenaline rushes it was going to be a rough one. I am guessing the medication is pretty much out of my system but I reckon the brain now has to readjust to it not being there.....just a guess. Not seeing my gp till Friday so let’s see what happens. I just need a huge energy boost right now but hoping a good nights sleep will help. Keep going girls we’ll get through this x

Same here folks. Been back on the 20MG since march 26, still have morning wretching. Still not 100%. I go for gall bladder ultrasound next tues to rule out that being issue with nausea.
DOc and myself both think it is due to anxiety, I tend to react by vomiting, I know it varies for each. Also doc said it will take time for the prozac to build back up the serotonin to the point where I will feel better. I think that would apply to you folks as well. HEre's wishing us better days.

Likewise. It is one hell of a road let me tell you. We're all in the same boat, I hope we can all pull through this and come out stronger in the end.

Hi all, just wondered how we are all doing? For me now that the fluoxetine is out of my system I am starting to feel more “normal”. My appetite is good, started to put weight back on (I lost too much and was underweight). I still feel abnormally tired but I’ll take that over all the other symptoms. I went to a craft fair recently and came back with stuff to make soft toys and I am enjoying that.....no idea what I’m going to do with them 😂. I want to start dancing again, haven’t been for months. Today I am taking a walk with a friend followed by coffee & cake. I am hoping this upward trend carries on and I can even get a part time job as I had to give up a couple of months ago due to ill health. I am still awaiting tests for autoimmune disorders and CFS has been mentioned as a possibility for my symptoms. I hope you are all also recovering well and your way of life improving? X

Hi Christine, good to hear you're starting to feel better. I'm definitely having better days although still a little wobbly at times ! It's been awful and at times I've thought I'd never get through it , the CBT has helped me cope and put in to practice techniques to reduce the panic. Fingers crossed for better days for all of us . Take care Xx
