Stopping fluoxetine

Posted , 5 users are following.

I have been on fluoxetine for 6 weeks. Went to the doctor this morning and agreed to stop taking. The last few days have been a nightmare. I feel 100 times worse than before I started on them. I know a lot of you say to give them more time but I know I can't go on feeling like this.

Hi, I had to stop fluoxetine due to such an adverse reaction to them too. I asked for anti sickness meds to help get me through it as I was vomiting throughout the day, and couldn't eat.

As soon as I stopped taking it, I felt better, sometimes no matter how long you give meds, it just might not be they are the one for you.

Can I ask if you're going to start any new medication? I had to wait four days after coming off fluoxetine before I started my new med.

Don't give up hope, sometimes it takes a while to find one that suits

I'm too scared to try anything else for now. Looking back I'm wondering whether I reached for them too soon. I was certainly wasn't as bad as I am now although I've calmed since I came back from the doctor. Don't know if that's because I feel good about making the decision to stop them. The GP said she would get a community mental health nurse to see me in next few days so I'll see how I feel and what they say.

Do what you think is right, talk it through, that may be what you need to do rather than take medication, only you can know that. If you do feel like you still need meds you can always ask to try something from a different family of meds, I can't use SSRI's as they don't suit me. See how you feel, but remember to seek help sooner rather than later - good luck, stay positive, eat well and exercise, sounds basic but really does make a difference 😊

Andrew did you wean yourself off ? Contrary to what some medical professionals say about no side effects if you stop abruptly, there always is plenty people on here experienced so.

You need to gi back to your doctors

Sorry to hear Andrew, but you know your body the best... the medication does not agree with anyone. I really thought about stopping so many times too. See how it goes, and let us know how you feel, I hope there won't be any ugly side effects from stopping too. Hugs.

You need to wean off these - never stop these abruptly or you'll be quite ill and worse than before.

There are many types of SSRI's and one doesn't fit all, and its often trial and error finding one that suits you.  Yes they all give side effects, but one would be kinder to your body than another.  Also starting on a low dose and build up ........ and yes, they do take time, but they do work for many.

You should go see your doctor asap as what you're feeling isn't about to go away for a while yet.  Reinstating a small dose is probably the best, build it up a little, stay on it and then wean off slowly over a couple of months (or 6 weeks as you've taken them for that long).
