Stopping medications after Gallbladder op

Posted , 3 users are following.

Hi, I am having my GB op on tuesday and was just wondering  wether I will be able to come off of the omeprazole I have to take now. I am on buscopan too but guessing I will be able to just stop them. But I would so love to get off the Omeprazole. Did anyone else find they didnt need them after the op and did you have any problems coming off them please.

Thanks smile

    Hi

Omeprazole is usually given for stomach problems such as gastritis or ulcers or acid reflux and not for gallbladder problems.  I had my gallbladder out in April this year and I had gastritis before the operation but it really flared up after the operation and instead of the 20mg daily I was on I ended up on 80mg a day as well as 300mg of Ranitidine - I'm still having problems too.  I think you will have to wait and see what happens after the operation - don't suspend it straight away, give your body time to adjust without a gallbladder and then see how you go.

I had very bad acid reflux well before any of my Gallbladder pain began and looking back now I believe that this may be  was the Gallbladder causing this . I will carry on taking it and see further down the line if I can begin to cut back a bit. Sorry to hear youve still got the acid problem. Thanks for your reply smile

I don't regret having it done as I was in so much pain before and everybody is different.  Hoping that your operation goes well and you make a quick recovery.

    hi

im now 2 1/2 weeks post op - i too was on lansoprazole and renitedine before the op, i thought i would be able to stop them after the op but just before i went to surgery the surgeon said i would need to still take them as the acid reflux and gallbladder were two different things, he said see how it goes afterwards then reduce to test it - being a smart ass i thought i feel so much better post op i will reduce now, this has resulted in really bad (painful) bouts of diarrhea, i had that 3 days on the trot so have started the lansoprazole again and fingers crossed it seems to have settled - i did some research and because the bile is now not dispatched when needed through the gallbladder it is now going straight to my stomach causing a build up  - eating little and often and taking the tabs should help... i may swap to the renitedine later as that can be bought over the counter..  i also read on another forum that someone had the same symptoms when he had too much cheese and milk afterwards so will monitor that too as i had had cheese in a couple of sandwiches too - all trial and test i guess - but like many i don't regret the op and certainly don't miss feeling like crap all the time :-)  good luck and let us know how you do (i personally have found these pages invaluable) x

    Hi Jane,

I hope that your op goes well and wish you a speedy recovery

I had mine removed on the 6th August and just feel so much better its so nice to finally be pain free.  I too took Omeprazole to help with the gall bladder problems and my GP suggested I now reduce the dosage which I have been doing for the last week I now take one on alternate days and I hope eventually to stop taking them altogether.  So far I have had no problems and hope it stays that way!
