Stopping methimazole

My levels are going into the hypo range and so my gp told me to stop taking methimazole. Is there side effects from stopping or withdrawal symptoms? I was on 5 mg once a day. I have not been on it for 6 days now.

Hello. I was diagnosed with Graves' disease 20 days ago. The doctor prescribed 30 mg of methimazole per day. But it seems to me too much, although I have very noticeable improvements. I have one only Lab result: TSH 0.006 (norm 0.450-4.500), T4 Free 4.88 (norm 0.82-1.77), Thyroid Stim Immunoglobulin 9.60 (norm 0.00-0.55). I scare that i am go to Hipo with this dose. I am worry about this.

I was diagnosed as Hyperthyroid, my blood results were TSH 0.005 T3 6.38 and my T4 1.63 so my family doctor today prescribed me methimazole 5mg every eight hours. I haven’t taken any of the medication just yet. I have a partially solid an partially cystic nodule on the left side of my neck so I’m going to be going to the Endocrinologist to have the fine needle procedure done. I feel fine other then being tired sometimes and get a little dizzy once in a while so I’m wondering if this medication is the right decision or perhaps I should let the Endo doc discuss other alternatives with me before taking the methimazole like my family doc prescribed? Any suggestions would be great. Thanks

Ask your doctor to check you for Hashimoto antibodies as well as Graves. If you have both, you will be very sensitive to prescribed meds, either Methimazole or Carbimazole for hyper and Levothyroxine for hypo. You will manage your condition better with supplements alone. Vitamin 'D is very important to good immune function so get your vitamin D level checked and if deficient supplement that.

SIDE EFFECTS OF METHIMAZOLE TAKING THYROID HORMONE BELOW THE RANGE

    • Arrhythmia (forgetting beats) start within 30 mins of taking the pill, and last for exactly 24 hours. If I don't take another at the 24-hour mark, the symptoms stop.
    • Tension in the neck and heaviness on the chest.
    • A bunch of parasympathetic little pains and twangs on the chest and arms, sometimes with 'warm' feeling on the chest.

SIDE EFFECTS OF STOPPING METHIMAZOLE 'COLD TURKEY'

If I stop methimazole cold turkey, I get the following (so far I've seen the first 2 days).

    • A feeling of 'returning to normality', where emotions feel more stable and light
    • A random feeling of a 'rush' when for a couple of moments there's the feel of a substance rising in the body. Gives a bit of a roller coaster feel.
    • On the second night, I started feeling electric pings on my nerves of the hands and feet, more, but not only, on the left side of the body.
    • Some parasympathetic twangs, the main difference here to the ones from too low hormone is that the 'dull' little pressure pain on the chest is absent.
