I am a 57 year old Chef and i have just had a TKR done 5 days ago .

My frustration is the fact i cant do the straight leg lift on the excercise plan .

Is it normal to still be struggling to lift your leg up off the bed ?

Or am i just being impatient and it will come . I dont want to miss out these excercises too long as i worry it will hinder my recovery

    2 things that helped me:

    1. Sliding the leg from side to side and trying to get a tiny bit of lift as it went (plastic under the leg helps it slide)

    2. I remembered all of a sudden that to lift your leg you have to hinge at the hip. My brain had completely forgotten that!

Gradually I managed it but it’s hard and it takes time. My quad was badly bruised by the tourniquet so that didn’t help.

Just had a little laugh there at myself ,this straight leg cenario reminded me when I eventually managed to raise my leg about 4 inches I was chuffed to bits with myself until I had a good luck, from my thigh to my knee straight as an arrow then from my knee to my ankle a hanging 3 inch drop, absolutely know strength in my upper leg muscles at all. But a few weeks on from that and a lot of leg work and straight leg conquered.Everything this TKR throws at you is do able with patience and allowing time to heal it’s a hard slog and you have days when you feel your not making progress and others where you make leaps,I’m now 14 weeks in and feel it’s been worth every second my knee feels so good compared to what I had to endure before the op,it’s still a bit stiff first thing and aches if I do a bit to much, but no crippling arthritis pain.So all you kneebies presently going through this it gets so much better so grit and determination and happy days ahead.
