Strain or disk related?

Long story short - two years ago I became poorly with what was diasnosed as labyrinthitus but a specialist disagreed with that.
Ever since I have been able to feel a ‘lump’ in the back of my neck just to the right of my spine. (This area was sore for the first week of my illness two years ago)
Doctors have dismissed it despite countless visits.
This morning I coughed hard and felt a strange sensation in the same area- since then my neck has been sore and I have pain tilting my head to the side my neck is tight as hell and I feel like there’s a decreased range of motion. It almost feels like I’m turning my head through mud like there’s a resistance. Any ideas?

Has your doctor checked for arthritis in your neck? A simple xray would show if you have arthritic changes. If not I would ask for this.
I have early osteoarthritis in my neck with the stiffness and pain you describe. An xray showed it clearly and I was referred to a rheumatologist for diagnosis and physiotherapy.
Forward head posture is one of the main causes of this, texting, leaning forward at work i.e., on a computer, any job where you have to look down a lot.
It can lead to a boney deformity at the base of the neck that feels like a lump called a gibbus.
If I were you, I would see your GP and ask for a neck xray.
Osteoarthritis is generally wear and tear but it can affect all ages.
Best of luck.....

Very interesting! I have had an MRI and two ultrasounds on the area in the last 18 months which apparently were all normal.
I will certainly look into the ‘gibbus’ theory as that’s is something I’ve not heard of.
Strangely enough I’m only 35 but have had very physical jobs since 16 including vehicle mechanic for 10 years.
My next plan was to go and see an osteopath and request an X-ray as I’m getting absolutely nowhere with gp.
I thought seeing as the latest coughing brought on pain, muscle spasm in neck and lack of motion tilting head that they may be able to connect some dots but they simply told me I had strained a muscle and offered no connection to the previously existing lump.
I can’t tell you how frustrated I have become with gp’s.
