Strange Cross-eyed Feeling causing Loss of Balance
Posted , 86 users are following.
For about the past 2 years I have suffered from a sudden feeling of visual imbalance or cross-eyed sensation (although not actually cross-eyed)! This in turn causes a type of vertigo involving loss of balance accompanied by nausea. This lasts for approx 10-15 minutes before my vision returns to normal. I have had 2 eye tests which confirm nothing untoward (I have replacement single vision lenses in both eyes following cataract surgery). My doctors have given up trying to diagnose this condition having carried out blood tests for Pituitry, thyroid, diabetes, anaemia and infection which are all perfectly OK. I would be interested to know if anybody has suffered similar or knows a possible cause. I have not been rfeferred to a neurologist or recommended for CT or MRI. I am female aged 65

Hello, I have been having the same phenomenon you describe for the last year. Been to two neurologists, primary care doctor, bloodwork, optometrist, opthomologist, had an MRI of head/neck and nothing shows as abnormal. With no explanation, my eyes will feel like they are crossing (although others tell me they don't look that way) and I can't focus. I can see if I close one eye or the other, but not with both open. I've found that if I close my eyes & press with the tips of my fingers on the bottom of my eyeballs, pressing them back into my head slightly, it clears my vision, but I am left with a residual pressure headache for several hours along with slight dizziness. I do suffer from classic migraine headaches (where I see a jagged aura first) for several years now and take Naratriptan at onset to help alleviate those symptoms.
Something else I experience I can only describe as a type of "pregnancy brain". Where I used to be mentally sharp, verbally well-spoken and expressively fluent, I now have difficulty remembering random words mid-thought or mid-sentence causing me to stop, stutter around....um....can't think of the word.......all the time. This is extremely frustrating. Anyone else having this as well?
I am almost 55 years old, peri-menopausal, good health, don't suffer from anxiety or other ailments, no genetic history of dementia. Have regular bloodwork, physicals, GYN check-ups, mamograms, etc. and noone can tell me what this is other than "probably migraine related". I have looked online but find very little as far as diagnosis and find it strange that so many suffer from similar symptions that are, as yet, undiagnosed. I can only surmise that it is result of hormonal changes combined with daily stress and environmental/nutritional affects to our bodies which have changed from years ago.
I guess it's comforting to know I am not alone, and will follow this thread for feedback and update if my own situation changes. Bless you all.

I don't get cross eyed feeling but what I get I can only describe as staring at something for too long and when you snap out of it you sort of shake your head only I am not staring it just happens for no reason. Scares the hell out of me because I don't know what it is or why it happens. I wish I could explain better the feeling but I don't know how else to describe it

Hi Kate, I too have experienced this very unsettling and scary feeling; also with nausea and vertigo but not always. The causal link I have discovered is eating too much chocolate. If I do it triggers migraines and the vertigo. I've had brain scans, etc. and no one could find a cause until I tried not eating chocolate for a week and my migraines went away. Hope this helps!

This is new to me. I was driving almost crashed. I am a 61 old male, recently had open heart surgery. When this condition accured I was rushed to hospital thought heart attack. All test showed all good except heart rate high at 119. Don't know anything else except fear.

The first time I had an episode I was driving and scared the living daylights out of me. I was in a situation where I couldn't pull over right away but knew the road well enough to get the truck and myself to a safe place. I was concerned about passing out and no one finding me for a while so I need to get to a public parking lot. They doctors and I mean DOCTORS are running so many tests and their diagnosis so far has been "migraine" without a headache (silent).

39 yo male with same symptoms. Started about 7 years ago. Used to get vertigo with the crossed eyes sensation, but over the years the vertigo stopped. Learned how to close one eye and manage navigating to a safe place to wait it out. I've been to cardiologist and neurologist, had an MRI with nothing found. Otherwise healthy. I have had blurred vision before, but the two don't happen at the same time. Dr said it must be migraine. But I don't have headaches. High stress job, may be stress or anxiety. Someone please post if they ever figure this out. Thought I was alone. Had my wife look at my eyes last time and asked her if they were actually crossed and she said no. So strange and scary.

I am experiencing the same symptoms. Started about 7 yrs ago only about 1 time a year and then became more frequent to the point where it is happening about 1 time a week or more and now includes weaknesses in my arms at times, memory loss or delay, vertigo and after the episode my eyes hurt. The doctors are calling it a type of migraine without the headache (silent). I think that's just a catch all diagnosis. MRI, Eye exams, ear tests show nothing.

Sounds as though the diagnosis is right. Mine was definitely a type of silent migraine which I think is little understood and can cause a wide range of symptoms, some of which are quite frightening! All my tests showed nothing either and, as yuou say, it was a diagnosis based on eliminating everythig else. Mine stopped once my system got back into chemical balance following surgery

I also have this problem. It happens very unexpectedly and "out of the blue", mine only lasts 3-4 minutes.
I do have a hx of seizures, following a car accident 40 yrs ago. This cross eyed feeling started in 2011. Recently having more frequent episodes.
I had a CT scan, an EEG and an opthamologist visit, with no diagnosis.

Hi
I had this happen yesterday. I was just sitting down and all of a sudden couldn't focus, just as if I was cross eyed. It was really scary!
Went to doctor and he couldn't really diagnose anything apart from possible migraine?
I do get a Migraine about twice a year, but with visual disturbance nothing like that ( zig zaggy line and bits of my vision missing).
I am really scared that it will happen again.

It does seem that the most common cause for this is a form of migraine. That was the case for me, although the reason eas quite complicated and had caused changes to hormones/chemical balance. If it persists you should get further tests. I had every test you can think out and it ruled out any other cause! Migraine is not fully understood and it can take many forms, varying in each person.

Thanks for that. Something else I realised was I am cutting down on Caffeine and hadn't had any, also am bingeing on sugary things but some of the time doing the opposite, also hadn't had much water!?

This happened to me just today. I had just walked in from picking up after the dog and I felt dizzy then realised I was experiencing being cross eyed. It lasted about 30 seconds and was a very uncomfortable sensation, especially when you know you're not doing it. I even looked in the mirror to see if my eyes were different but they weren't.
I have had a cough since January, been put on antibiotics and the cough was practically gone when I got a cold and that seemed to set it off again. This week I got it again and last night was the worst, I mean kneeling over a bucket because the cough is so bad you heave. I fell to sleep through pure exhaustion and this morning it seems to have practically gone, but then the cross eyed sensation happened and I was paranoid it was a stroke or something. My doctor over the phone said it could be low blood pressure, I just hope it was a one off.
