Strange fever fluctuations

My 4 years old son has had a fever for the last 7 hours. We have been alternating Motrin and Tylenol every 3 hrs. His fevers have been fluctuating between 99 degrees and 103 degrees. Coming like waves they build up to 103 and then slowly drop to 99 (hitting 102,101,100) then build back up to 103. This has been happening multiple times an hour. The doctor we saw said our thermometer must be broken but we have been testing it on all four members of our family without fluctuations in temperature, we also used two other thermometers just to be sure and they also showed the same fluctuations. Any idea why it's fluctuating like this?

Fever is a common sign of illness in children and is most frequently due to infection. However, when acute and chronic infections have been excluded and when the fever pattern becomes recurrent or periodic, the expanding spectrum of autoinflammatory diseases, including periodic fever syndromes, should be considered. Consult a pediatrician.
