Strange Fluoxetine side effects

Hi everyone.

Started to take Fluoxetine just over 2 weeks ago after being prescribed them for depression and anxiety. I'm hoping it will get better with time, but at the moment I'm feeling so tired constantly, and like I've lost all my motivation. I'm also feeling quite self conscious around people, and my anxiety has increased a little. If anyone's had a similar experience, how long was it until you started to feel better? I'm not planning on stopping the medication as I've heard it does take time, but can't help wondering how long I have to endure these exacerbated feelings :?

I'm so happy to have found this site. I thoght I was losing my mind with the side effects I was experiencing. I was prescribed this for anxiety that has become very uncomfortable. The side effects though made it even worse, and then I was experiencing all sorts of other things. Reading the comments here makes me feel so much better!

Well I just recently started taking Prozac. And I feel like I can't control my emotions. is this normal? Did anyone else have this issue? I feel like I am not me. As if my impulses are taking control. If anyone knows anything or can give me advice I would appreciate it a lot. Thanks.

Yes I can confirm, and im sure a lot of others will also....

the side effects can do this... and many other things.

They do settle after a few weeks.... and mostly disappear.

My advice is to occupy yourself for large parts of the day - go for walks, watch movies, make tea, relax, relax, relax.... sleep... while you can.... sleep... when you can.... in a few weeks things will be much better... i hope... keep talking on here... keep in touch...tell us how you are, what you do and how you feel... it is familiar to us now.

I recently started taking Floxetine and the side effects are not good, I am so tired all the time.  I am taking it for my mood swings with the Menopause I am single and am worried that these side effects of nausea and dioreah are going to keep on.  I am on day 7.  I am having to force myself to eat, last nights evening meal was half a tomatoe half a small cucumber and 1 potatoe and a small amount of shredded chicken.  I am really struggling to keep positive.  I live in a very hot country but I am a UK resident and moved out of the UK 10 years ago,  I am single whereas all my friends have partners to share their feelings with.  Will this get better? sad

      Sally...

Don't despair... it will get better.

It will take a few weeks to get the side effects under some control, but it does get a lot lot lot better in time.

      Good luck

I have been on Prozac for about six months since I was diagnosed with anxiety and depression.it was only after Monday when I increased the dose from 40 to 50 and almost immediately started getting recognizable side effects, most disturbingly suicidal thoughts. I was terrified and felt like I needed a new medicine to maintain my well being. My doctor told me to go back on the 40 mg the following morning, and I still feel lightheaded with lessened but still present side effects. Does it just take time to metabolize and get the excess Prozac out of my system, or do I need a new pill?

Just found this site today and wanted to share my Prozac story. Started on Paxil 11 years ago and was on it for almost 10 years (30mg). Weaned off Paxil (very painful process). Felt some depression and anxiety 6-8 mo after stoppping paxil and went on 10mg Prozac. Seemd to help a little, only side effect I felt was a painful headache when I would laugh a lot. It was a very very painful head ache alomot debilitating and would have to stop what I was doing and recover. Then Dr. perscribed 20mg of Prozac. I was fine for first month then side effects started to slowly creep in. I was extremely tired all the time, and felt like my head was foggy, and had no confidence or self esteem, felt like doing nothing. Went back to 10mg Prozac and after 3-4 days I felt much much better. Only side effect is the extreme headache / head pain from laughing a lot.

I changed from Paroxetine to Fluoxetine on my doctor's advice when I told him I suffered a lack of motivation. I've been on it now for 3 weeks and I feel it stabilises my mood a little with fewer thoughts and anxieties going round in my head even though I have OCD. I'm on 20mg. But my lack of motivation is back again. Possibly it has something to do with my lifestyle. I feel incredibly lazy and guilty for feeling this way. I've just taken another 20mg, having read that up to 60mg is OK. Sometimes I feel that even though medication really does help, it won't entirely solve my problems. Sometimes I feel that all I can do is accept that I feel this way and try and maximise on the good things in my life, i.e. cup half full rather than half empty. Does anyon else feel this way?

      Hi dopy

Lack of motivation is a sympton of anxiety and depression and a side effect of the fluox so its sometimes hard to tell whats what. All i can say is that in my experience i forced myself to do stuff, get up get showered n dressed and go out, keep busy and distracted.

it is scientifically proven that exercise and fresh air/nature can significantly improve mood and sense of well being and from my experience this is very true, i felt soo much better on the days i made myself do stuff! Dont get me wrong, no jogging or exercise classes for me but any activity and/or distraction was a huge help. Take a blanket day when you need it but not every day.

Keep busy and get well x

Yes, keeping interested in things is important. But I've been on fluoxetine now for 6 weeks and I don't think it's right for me. I think I need something stronger or maybe something in addition to it. I'll be going to the doctor's tomorrow for advice..

    Hi,

I took my first 20mg fluoxetine tablet about 2pm this afternoon and by 4:30pm I felt nothing but nauseous, dizzy and confused.

Does anyone think it is normal that the side effects have hit me straight away after only a couple of hours?

My Dr said the side effects could be bad but I have to push through them which I am planning to do but I didn't think they would start from day 1.

    Has anyone else had this?

I have been taking Flouxatine 20mg for 3 months now. Yet, I am still extremey tired and depleted of energy. I am down all the time, and very self councious arounf people as well. At 16 I should not be feeling like this, I should be out with friends smiling and having fun, but I have to skip out because of how exausted I feel. i started drinking coffee. Doesn't help, just an fyi. I would talk to your foctor about it.
