Strange sensation / tightness in chest and upper throat

Posted , 218 users are following.

I'm hoping for some help please..I have been feeling this strange sensation in the chest and lower throat. It's a sensation which I can only describe as a heavy feeling (no pain) and a tickling cough sensation in the chest. This then moves upwards to the lower throat area and makes it as though it is becoming tight. It makes me clear the throat and try to get the mucus out. I can feel a bit coming out but not much. The sensation makes me want to cough.I have been to doctor many times and he has listened to my chest and back. He's said that it's all clear. In the end he gave me antibiotics which I took for 7 days but it made no difference. He's also given me ventolin but it made no difference. I had chest x-ray and that showed clear. He referred me to ENT specialist who did a nasal endoscopy and that was clear. I have also done a barium swallow and that was also clear. However, I am still having this problem. I have also noticed that when I cough, I hear a grinding noise in my chest which sounds like friction. I've now been referred to a respiratory specialist and my appointment is next Friday. I'm really worried as I don't know what it can be. Has anyone else has this strange feeling? Can it be infection of the lower airway which has not cleared up? All this has been going on for 3 months now and I'm really worried and not sure what to do...Any help would be really appreciated. Thank you..

Though not totally convinced its GERD or acid reflux etc. I've today felt pretty rubbish & been reading that Aloe Vera Juice is a recommended digestion aid, amongst other things, so its early days yet so will keep all posted & let you know  if it makes any difference

Yes, please do. Lots of luck. Its the end of the day here and symptoms haven't let up at all. Walked around the theme park with my son all day feeling like I couldn't breathe. sad so sick of it.

Look up Manuka Honey to relieve acid reflux but not if you are diabetic as it will put your blood glucose up.

I am 40, generally healthy.  Been feeling the same kinda things, tightness in my upper chest, throat, and my tongue.  I feel kinda out of breath when I talk.  I noticed I hold my breath often, either due to pain, or some worry about the pain.

Like many of you, I go through moments of fear, thinking I have some life-threatening thing going on, despite the cardiologist saying I am great, tons of blood tests coming back saying everything is okay, and my doc saying this is related to stress.  So, it appears there is no cause.

So the dilemna has been, how to not worry when I am having physical reminders that nag at me (assuming everything else is ok).

One helpful thing I have found is easy yoga, which does focus on breathing.  I think there is a breathing related problem some of us share and we are holding our breath.  Along with that, stress and worry, which can cause digestive issues and body pain.

Anyone else find any small things that can chip away at least a little?

I have been, by default, now diagnosed with chronic fatigue disorder.  Not sure if my so-called "anxiety disorder"  still sticks as I told my doc I am only anxious about my symptoms, which yes make me feel anxious.  I never did take the Cymbalta she prescribed.

When I initially saw her for this, I did take the ativan she prescribed.  My advice is "do NOT take Ativan!"

I have so little energy.  I haven't even been able to do light beginner yoga.  My only ideas now are to try to improve my gut health with magnessium and fermented foods.  I'm open to hearing anyone else's helpful tips or ideas.  I am hopeing Magnesium will help.

Sorry to hear you're having a rough one Greg. I am as well. Feel like I can't breathe at all out of the right side of my chest. Lump in throat feeling. What is the deal with the Ativan? My doctor prescribed it to me and I took a half of pill twice. Made me feel exhausted and want to curl in a ball and sleep. Going to have barium swallow next week hopefully. Still taking albuterol for asthma and prilosec for acid reflux- which I don't even think I have. ENT said no signs of reflux when they nasal scoped me. I have felt completely exhausted the past two days. No coffee for 3 weeks- my doctor said it is bad for reflux (again, not convinced that is what I have). Keep us posted. Prayers, always.

Melissa, I'm sorry to hear about your struggle as well.  I was also told maybe I have reflux, which I pretty much figured I never did.  I will say that overall my digestion is not like it normall is.  I tried a "gut healing" diet, which mainly emphasized bone broth and fermented foods (fermented veggies, yogurt, saurkraut).  I will say it is very easy on the stomach.

So to answer you about the Ativan.  Ativan is a barbituate, and we should really only take it if it's kind of necessary.  My experience was that I would have withdrawl symptoms, starting after about a week, personality changes, and I felt like I was losing my marbles.  I read the side effects and one of them was actually "may change your personality."  So just one guys experience, but I quickly got off of that.  Other than that, the physical side effects are good to check out as well. Hoping you heal quickly and get better smile

A gut healing diet sounds intriguing. Sometimes I wonder if this issue is a type of phantom ailment. Like it feels like one thing but its caused totally by something else. I've had a ultrasound of my gall bladder and liver- they're cleared. Chest xray- cleared. Ct scan of chest with contrast- cleared. Ent- cleared.

Here are so possibilities I've also pondered and kicked around...

      Gerd

      Thyroid issue

      Esophagitis/ulcer

      Pinched nerve

Yeast (candidia) in gut or lungs

Post nasal drip (no signs seen by my ent)

Allergy to something new brought in my house

      Mold growth in house

Anyone have any other ideas or possibilities? It seems like most of us have had a lot of tests and no results. rolleyes have just been trying to think outside the box.

Does anyone else have asthma? Anxiety disorder? Psoriasis? IBS? Hormonal issues? Yeast infection/BV issues? Just trying to think of physical ailments I deal with somewhat frequently to see if there are any connections.

It's interesting you mentioned the pinched nerve. I have often had that same idea and I feel like in fact that the whole issue started with a back pain. I had a pain that radiated and was dull but definitely would get my attention. So....what made you mention the pinched nerve for yourself?

I have IBS, not diagnosed but I know I have it. I also have severe anxiety. Medication makes it much better. I am on Prozac. All tests including chest X-ray, EKG, and blood, thyroid tests all came back clear. I'm noticing that chest pain is much better when I out and about, away from home and work. And also better when distracted. Not gone, but I am not noticing as much. I'm sure it will come back right now not so bad.

Same thing Greg. I had a weird pain around the area of my right shoulder blade and rubbing it, hoping for relief. I still have knots back there on the right side (I am right handed, and the chest tightness/lump in throat feeling is more on my right side, which has thrown me off since it started.) Although I am not convinced, I know gerd is possible. But I think it wouldn't be beneficial to dismiss another commonality or cause..

Well, you've just my day. I'm panicking just on my red wine because it makes easier my symptoms. Don't lik To do it. But what else?! Feel so bad. Was panicking this afternoon was ready to go to the hospital.  Can't wait to Thursday and talk to my GP. Hate it all.

I'm half ready to go to the ER right now. My chest and throat are so tight on the right side and my right lung is audibly wheezing. How is that even possible? My left side if completely fine. I can't take much more of this.

I'm not happy to see that others are sharing the same symptoms, but I'm glad to see I am not alone. I have basically the same symptoms. It started as a pressure or tightness in my chest. It made me panic, and I already have anxiety, so that didn't help. I started feeling out of breath, but I was getting plenty of oxygen, I just felt tired, like I needed to sit if I was standing. I then developed a cough that produced little mucous, and the mucous was crystal clear, so no infection. The sensation traveld to my throat. It wasn't sore, but it just felt tight and slightly itchy. The chest tightness and pressure was the worst though. It is frustrating because some days all of the symptoms are there, and on other days maybe there are some symptoms, or a new sympton all together. I am not saying that I continuously got new symptoms everyday. My symptoms are heavy tight chest, mostly in the very center moving up and sometimes a few inches below my collarbone. mostly dry coughand the stressed/heavy/irritated feeling in my lower throat.

I have also been experiences nasal congestion and nasal drip along with these symptoms. I went to my General Practitioner and she did an EKG for the chest pains and a chest x-ray, all came back as excellent. I have had three doctors listen to my heart and chest saying that everything sounds perfect, no liquid or pneumonia or heart issues. Very frustating. I was hoping for it to be something quickly diagnosible and fixed, like a respiratory infection.

It gave me some relief to know that nothing is wrong with my heart and lungs. Doctors said it might be GERD, which I still think it is. I was on medication very briefly and It didn't seem to do anything. I am thinking it has to either be allergies, or more likely, GERD. I am taking mucinex and flonase, and nothing really seems to be working.

I am going to see an ENT today, but I am worried he won't be able to give me relief.

I really want to know, rai27, or anyone:

Are you having the similar symptons, especially the chest feelings and Congestion?

I went to colorado for a week and my chest and throat issues seemed to be gone, aside from cough and congestion.

I really look forward to hearing from you!

Dear Jacqueline YES ! I have all your exact same symptoms ! The tightness in my chest is like a pressure, spasm which radiates through to the upper back. I too have developed a bad nasal drip and upon waking it's as though I have the worst cold.. I sneeze like mad and most mornings ( not all ) get through a box of Kleenex ! I too have the lump in the throat. This all started in April.. I had a severe allergic reaction to something and came out in severe hives and my tongue swelled ( I had to call an ambulance ! ) I was given adrenaline and antihistamine.. I had to go to my GP as the rash worsened and I was put on a 5 day course of steroids although the rash disappeared I then developed a terrible chest infection, I had to have 2 courses of antibiotic's as it didn't clear, and the chest and cough has lingered since although I have no infection. I have been told that the steroids weaken your immune system along with the antibiotics and lay you low. I have not been well since and these symptoms are not subsiding. I have been to the Doc as it's been so bad but the Doc said chest is clear and BP is normal ! He too suspects GERD and anxiety... I just think if I didn't have the symptoms I wouldn't have the anxiety ! I have an endoscopy in 2 weeks so will be very interested to learn the results.

I do hope we get to the bottom of it soon

      Jacqueline,

Sorry to hear what you've been going through.  On the upside, it sounds like you're doing quite a bit better now.

Although your symptoms are different from mine, and many of the post have various symptoms, I think there is a common theme of the symptoms creating quite a bit of anxiety for all of us.  They really are concerning, and I find it hard to ignore them and write them off easily.

I'm glad for the forum here to see that others have close to similar symptoms, which is helpful to know I'm not alone, like Jacqueline said.

I also have tried yoga, meditation, and deep breathing....all which seem to help.  I found an app called CALM, and it is a nice app to check in and relax the mind or give you a meditation for 5 minutes.  It won't be a fix, but it can chip away at the anxiety......which I believe is a Real secondary symptom some of us have due to the physical issues.

Allison, I'm so sorry to hear about your allergic reaction. That's awful! I haven't had anything serious happen during this, but it is still very uncomfortable and irritating. I was telling my boyfriend (jokingly of course) that it was driving me insane and I was so close to throwing myself in front of a train! I just can't get any relief. I literally just walked out of the ENT. He told me that I definitely have post nasal drip going on but no infection. He said it could definitely be contributing to all of my symptoms. He gave me a prescription which he explained is different than the antihistamine I am talking and it should clear me up and I should start getting relief. I still feel like it's something more, again maybe GERD. He did go on to reassure me and say even with the pain and discomfort I'm feeling, it is "definitely nothing serious." He told me to take the prescription, which I can't recall at the moment, for a week and if I don't feel better, to call him and come back in.

I asked, so okay if it doesn't work what's the next step or idea of what it could be? He told me GERD is the next thing he would suggest which is very likely. I did look up GERD symptoms and they really are identical to ours.

I feel so bad for you though, you definitely seem to have it worse off. All I can say is keep trying to get answers. I know how frustrating it is, like nobody can figure it out. It's a hopeless feeling. Knowing other people share the same experience helps you feel like you are not alone. I will keep you posted.

Hi all, I've been following this discussion for about a week now as I too have most of the symptoms as everyone else. I've had these symptoms on & off for well over a year now, more recently almost constant for the last 2/3 months. Twice been to se a consultant, twice had the nasal/throat scope and both times been discharged with "nothing to report". On latest visit to consultant he also advised some blood tests for which I got the results today...all O.k. Saw yet another GP today  who examined me, listened to my concerns, reviewed my history and yet again concluded that its either acid reflux or nasal drip. I think I can eliminate acid reflux as I dont get heartburn or indigestion and can eat anything .Been given nasal drops today (Flixonase Nasule) which I have had 2 doses and have to say my constant throat clearing has just about stopped and I do seem to feel a lot clearer....maybe its in my mind, but I do feel different. I forgot to mention earlier that about a month ago I was given a nasal spray (Avamys) which I used for about 3-4 weeks but which made little or no difference....the latest GP Told me today that the nasal spray could take up to 4 - 5 months to become effective!. Hope info might help, told GP that I'd been following this forum and that a huge number of us have the same symptoms to which he replied that this is an extremely common thing. Hope this info can allay a lot of concerns and hopefully reduce some anxiety, will keep you all posted .

      Good Luck all

I've been exactly like you for 4 weeks now and just now slowly srarted feel better. Still waiting for my x ray but blood is good. I Was tald that's a virus around with asthmatic effect. So....just do everything to make the symptoms easier. As you say my symptoms moving.

    • Posted

Hmmm... I was wondering if it was a virus. Didn't know they could last so long, for me now two months. Comes and goes. My ENT put me on Singulair, because of my congestion and nasal drip. We'll see how that works.

    • Posted

Hi Jacqueline.. I would hope that some of these symptoms would subside by now if it were a virus. rolleyes keep everyone posted on your progress. Once one of us gets a diagnosis I think it will give us all a bit more hope.

Not sure if my symptoms are the same since one of mine has been fatigue, but I have tested positive for mononucleosis. I don't currently have the virus, but I have a resurgence of the symptoms. At least that's what the doc says now. The symptoms can include pains and body aches.

      I hope this helps.

I agree with Melissa, if anyone else gets a diagnosis, please share!

What can it be. I've been for 4 weeks! All September! Im so worried becausethe symptoms moving and that back-sholders pain is bad+ chest + throat. ...it's only I would say my nose is a little bit better and throat not runy sensations.

    • Posted

I am actually starting to feel a bit better. Maybe it is the Singulair that I was prescribed, but I am only on day three. Less sensations in the chest and throat during the day, mostly in the morning. Still congested though, no change there.

I was prescribed Singular as well. My son is on it everyday for his asthma but I'm such an anxious nut that I hate taking medications every day. I was prescribed it a long time ago.. Maybe I will try it. Nothing can hurt at this point.

Hmm.. That is interesting Greg. I had mono as a teen (I am 30 now) and have had a lot of fatigue the past few months. I had chalked it up to stress and anxiety but that's interesting that your doctors think that could be causing these symptoms. My lump in throat is bad today. Wasn't there much at all yesterday. Tightness and wheezy on the right side of my chest again. I just don't understand it. rolleyes

I was pain free all night. Got up with only very dry mouth. Now I've got dry mouth and when was eating toast was like lump in mu throat and with a sharp sensation to my right sight of my neck. Feel neck and shoulders .

    • Posted

Let me known if you go back on the Singulair, and how that works out for you. My sensations in my lungs and throat have significantly decreased after taking it. I am on the 5th day of medication. Don't know if I am getting over whatever it is or if it's the meds. My ENT said that the singulair would get rid of my congestion, which is not the case so far. In any case I much less bothered by all of this. I hope it completely goes away and we all get relieve soon.

I stopped taking my PPI (esomeprazole) on Sunday because I am noticing now difference. I was taking 40mg of Omeprazole for a month over the summer and it did nothing as well- just had horrible side effects. I figured I'd give the other version of it a whirl at a lesser dose (hoping side effects may be less) and hope for the best. Chest is no better after 11 days on it so I'm done. I've been off it for 2 days and the chest itching sensation has lifted a bit. Was I having some type of allergy to it? Like Jesus Christ. I started Zantac today and will keep you posted on how that works out. Barium swallow scheduled for 10/12.. so 2 weeks.

Happy to hear the Singulair seems to be working for you. Keep us posted as the days/weeks pass if this is still the case. I may have to try it. I want to make sure there are no side effects from the Zantac like I experienced with the PPIs and then maybe I can start the Singulair.

Did I mention- I HATE TAKING MEDICATIONS? UGH lol

Hi! How are you doing? My x-ray is fine. Eating new antibiotics - don't work. Throat is just bad. Very dry and inflamed. Thinking to go to the hospital. Cannot feel taste of my food.
