Strange Substance/Growth/Mass on Toe After Injury

Hello,
I've recently went through an injury to my right great toe. I jammed it against a hard surface and broke the nail, and now there is blood in the nail bed and intense pain that has passed at this point. I have already been to the urgent care center, as well as a podiatrist who prescribed me antibiotics to fend off infection and pain killers for obvious reasons. The attached picture shows a strange growth/mass that anyone has yet to correctly identify, including nurses and doctors. This mass appeared immediately following the injury, as in instantaneously. Although the major pain of the injury has passed, the toe still looks pretty nasty and has this bulge on top, and I'm not sure what it is or what to do about it, if anything at all. I have been taking prescribed antibiotics and occasionally, pain medication when it is needed to keep the wound from getting infected and reduce the pain and swelling. The lump feels rather hard, and is continually covered with minor blood and puss when I remove the bandages. For the last two days, I have been leaving it exposed in order to get some air to the mass and try to heal it faster. Does anyone have any idea what this is or what should be done about it? Should I simply wait it out and see what becomes of it after a few weeks or months? Any information would be greatly appreciated, thanks!
