Stress caused by IBS symptoms.

I would like to offer a few words of hope to those suffering from IBS.

I don't really know what is worse, the stress and pain caused by IBS or the worry it causes when you think there is something seriously wrong with you like I did.

So far I have had a colonoscopy, four X rays, a CT scan and a gastro intestional examination with an endoscope down the throat. They found absolutely nothing. Can you imagine how much all this lot costs, no wonder the NHS is in trouble with money. I paid for the colonoscopy myself because I was in a big panic worrying about what was wrong with me.

I got on very well with consultant who carried out the procedure at the hospital and he explained about the stress that IBS sufferers like me put themselves through. He pointed out that this further exasibated the condition.(I hope I have spelt this correctly as it is not a common word in my vocabularly.) He also said that women were more likely to coplain about pain on the right side at the bottom of their ascending large colon and although exhaustive test had been carried out, he had found absolulely nothing physically.

My reason for writing this is to try and convince you not to worry.

There is obviously something not quite right in us but it will NOT kill us, it's just a blasted nuisance and something we have got to learn to live with. I found a change of diet, drinking lots of water, more exercise and taking life a bit easier helped me.

I am experimenting with some supplements from my local health shop. If I come up with something that works I will be back on this forum and share the information immediately.

Wishing you all the very best

    Dear junieju,

    Yes to you question!

The consultant who was remarkably helpful and talked to me all the way through the colonoscopy said that my IBS could be as a result of my diabetes.

There is a condition called gastro - intestinal diabetic neuropathy which basically means the nerves in my colon have been damaged by high blood sugar over the years.

I could believe this because I also get similar pains in my left leg, the left hand side of my back and my left hand in two fingers. It sometimes makes me feel shaky and affects how long I can sleep.

I am sharing all this information so that you and others can compare it with their symptoms. My GP is very nice but when I tell him all this, there is a look of disbelief on his face as if I am not to be taken to seriously. Medical people never seem to tell you much about your condition. I have learn't more about IBS just by reading what others say on this forum.

I wish I could find something to stop the discomfort, I would be back on this forum with the information like a shot!

You have a lovely Christmas to and it is very nice to talk to you.

    Best wishes

      Hi Robert

Looks like i need to change my doctor and find one in wales.

Think we could write a book on all of the things we are going through.

Dr Nick Read from the IBS network is good, i Like to read his website, also cooking for the sensitive gut, is another site i like.

I am also glad i joined the IBS network.

      Thanks for your help

      Happy Christmas

    Dear Ms Lisa,

You make the point perfectly that we are all different.

I have never had any stomach pains with IBS. My IBS started in my decending colon and seems to stay in my large intestine. Never in the small intestine or stomach. I have tried all sorts of probiotics in the form of yogarts like LLAETH Y LLAN (£1.75 a pot) and capsules such as advanced acidophilus plus and they do nothing for me.

IBS is the name that doctors give to a whole range of intestinal complaints, its like saying you have a cold, there are hundreds of different viruses you might have caught.

It's nice to here that you have found what works for you.

    All the best

    Dear kim59492,

I feel very sorry for you, I can appreciate the sress you are under. It is obviously dreadful to be very ill but feel that no one is listening to you.

Please don't despair, doctors and consultants are pretty sure you have IBS because of previous tests, what you say to them about your condition and how you are reacting to your symptoms. Medical people get lots of practice at getting diagnosis correct as they have to do it so often.

It is one of the symptoms of our condition to think there is something seriously wrong with us. I even jumped the gun and paid for my own colonoscopy, I was so convinced I had bowel cancer. Of course I was completely wrong I had IBS and that was after paying out £831.00 to go private.

If you kept going for colonoscopy examinations the stress alone would make you condition worse without being told that once again they found nothing.

My IBS has improved by relaxing more, keeping a diary and sticking to the foods I know I can eat. I also take Buscopan anti spasmodic medicine before each meal.

Only you can come to terms with this condition and create the diet which works for you.

I hope this forum helps you in some way and you have a relaxed enjoyable Christmas.

    Robert
