Stretch marks appear when the skin is subject to fairly fast growth in the lower layers of the dermis as in puberty or pregnancy, or by simple weight gain.
You can help to prevent them by keeping your weight constant, and by massaging skin cream into the areas that are likely to be affected. Thighs, abdomen and breasts are the most likely areas.
Once you have them they are not easy to erase. and weight loss will often show them up as a wrinkly area.
If you have them try using a cream or oil with retinol as the active ingredient. This will help but it takes a while and they probably will not disappear completely. They often just become less noticeable with age.
There is laser therapy available but I understand it will not get rid of the marks completely, and it is expensive.
