Stretches allowed??

Hi, I'm 3 weeks post op bilateral posterior approach. I loved yoga before my surgery. Is it too early to do the butterfly stretch where your heals are together and your hips/legs fall to the side? Don't want to dislocate my hips but can't wait to do certain stretches. Anyone have any advice/experience if that stretch is allowed?

Greetings Kim, actually your not to break the 90 degree angle way longer than 2wks.

Id ask your surgeon before you try that yoga position.

I'm a pilates and yoga teacher (9 weeks post op )...I strongly advise that you do not do "butterfly ". I've been doing shoulder bridge 8-10reps ..squats against the wall with feet gently turned out .clam with pillow between knees ..these are the sort of thing exercises you should have come out with gx

Thanks Gail for letting me know! When did you resume the yoga poses after your surgery that you described? Is there an eventual time where we are allowed to do all yoga poses?

Hi Kim I think that you will have to wait quite a lot longer, and be restricted to no leaning back on your heels stretches at all, I would just do the standing postures and none of the tree postures where your leg is on your thigh standing for quite a while, I do that one, and it creaks somewhat, but I can stand up, I have waited 18 months now and asked the surgeon last visit, he said avoid sitting down body twists and weight on turning out the legs at all costs as that is how a hip is dislocated.  Such a shame as I was so very supple for a man.

Just a change in life that we have to live with now.  Ian.

Thankyou Ian for your feedback! Do you think there will ever be a date when you can resume all yoga poses? How are you feeling after 18 months post-op?

      Hi Kim,

you will be able to resume all normal (for you) physical activity and exercise. Here weeks is VERY early and my advice is take it slowly and listen to your body. I'm two years post op now and have forgotten I had the operation.

Hi Kim I have my life back and no pain just a different pain that is getting sorted out with Steriod Injections in my left supposedly stronger side, my weak side now, I do as I say the Tree Postures but more Tai Chi movement excersise and seems to be fine in the small space that I have at home. Second injection soon, will do a post on it once I have had it for a few weeks.
