Struggling with globus

This sensation started about 6 months ago. It feels as if someone's hands are squeezing my throat, like I'm being strangled. Also, I sometimes feel as if my throat and tongue is swelling. I also have chest and upper back pain along with neck pain. The neck pain is only in the back and the strangulation feeling is more on the sides. This feeling started 6 months ago and lasted for about 2 months then went away for a month, and then came back. I have been to every type of doctor to rule things out such as ent, gastroenterologist, neurologist, etc. nothing has been found. They thought I had hypothyroidism, but then told me I didn't because my tsh leveled out on it's own. I am now being told this sensation is globus. I feel as if I have different symptoms than that of someone that has globus. I heard a lot of people with globus don't experience pain. The strangling feeling isn't painful, but I still have pain in my neck. These throat sensations have become quite debilitating as it feels like my throats could swell shut at any moment or like someone's hands aren't on my neck.  I'm just wondering if anyone has had similar problems and if they found any type of relief. Thanks

    Hey Olivia,

I have struggled with the exact same symptoms as you for the past 7 years. I have seen pretty much every related speciliast one could think of, none of which have helped in any way. I too have been told "its globus, it will go on its own". 7 years later...? Im currently working through this all with a pain speciliast to see if he can work out the cause of this. He is the first specialist who is actually trying to get to the bottom of this.

This all started for me when I was drinking a take away coffee and thought I felt a sharp object pierce my throat on the way down. It was also that week that I made a sudden and wrong movement with my neck which made me think i could have injured a muscle thats failed to heal. Can you recall what you were doing or did when these symptoms first came to your attention? Lets try and figure this out together! You are pretty much the only other person who has identifical symptoms to me, particularly that we made pain associated with it in the same areas.

    Hope to hear from you

Hello, I'm so glad to see I'm not alone. I forgot to mention this in my original post. Back in may, I went on a hike and about two weeks later I had all of the pain in the areas as I described and then gradually the throat sensation began to develop. Do you have the same throat sensation that I do? It's honestly so terrible. Also, have doctors checked the area where you thought the sharp piece scratched your throat, and what have they said about it?

Definitely you are right, there must be close connection between globus and neck muscle especially SCM and Scalene muscle, there are many nerves innervates through them controlling swallowing and other throat functions.unfortunately no specialists admit that possibilty, only thing they say are Gerd Lpr Thyroid etc.Nerve compression around neck muscles may /~ or in my humble opinion ~must be the culprit. In my case these muscle on my right side of my neck and upper back and shoulder blade are so stiff that they are on and off like a stone. When they are more stiff than they are with stress, posture or without any reason, swallowing becomes a nightmare and globus sensation on right side of my neck and throat increasing tremendously...

goodmorning after 2 years of constant globus tightening in throat or a choking feeling as well as pain in my neck and back and some inflammation or bloating and just feeling tired wore out and like total crap for 2 years I have finally got a diagnosis and starting treatment and having surgery in dec. been on treatment 2 weeks and half my symptons have disappeared and im starting to feel a little better everyday. so many suffer with this so I thought id let you all know what my issue is and that maybe you should get you functional dr to test. I went through over 200 tests and scans and firing doctors who didn't take the time to listen and do the right tests. I went to a naturalpath and gastroentologist for the 3 time new gastro. so in short I have a buildup of bacteria and candida in my stomach and colon and small intestines which has started to grow adhesions in my lining of my small instestine. it caused my entire gi tract to get an infection buildup of bacteria and caused methane and hydrogen  gases in my body. this is turn slowed down all my muscles in my entire body from major inbalance including my esophagus and my intestines. this was causing my globus sensation in my throat and chest. anyway its a long story and very hard to diagnose but mention it to gastro and its a few easy tests and maybe a colonoscopy to cut out the adhesions before starting treatments to balance your body and gut again. goodluck everyone hope you have great success in the end like I did and hoped I may have saved some people some time from wasted tests etc most of the globus usually comes from somewhere in gi tract

      Monica82327,

Thank you so so so so much for taking the time to jump on and help those who are still struggling. I have for a long time wondered if this problem could be g.i related. Please, could you specifically tell us which tests need to be done apart from the colonoscopy? Also, have you any info on why this has affected us i.e. were you advised its diet related, genetic etc? As its an infection could it not be treated with some aggressive drugs or homeopathic meds? Please share any and all info. Your message alone has given me so much hope you have no idea!!! Thank you!

I have the exact same thing that you are describing. Mine started in October and it is now January 2018. I am really sick of it. I take medications for acid reflux and have taken medications for about 10 years to keep the acid reflux under control as it has. But now I have this globus  Sensation.  I have had a CT with contrast. I do have two large nodules on my thyroid. However the thyroid doctor does not think they are causing any problems. I’ve been to an ENT and they say nothing. I’ve had an endoscopy everything looks good other than I do have Gerd. I go see another ENT this coming Tuesday. Hopefully they Tell me something. I am on the Lorazepam only because the feeling of this gives me anxiety I’m not an anxious person so I didn’t feel I had anxiety before this came on I am at my wits end. I’m not sure doctors know much about this. But if I don’t get some answers soon, I think I am going to try acupuncture. If anybody has any suggestions that actually work for this please help all of us!!

same boat here neck/back tightness and tightness around scm. somehow i believe this is connected together. Couldnt this possibly be the reason for bad posture in head area? tight neck/back etc from computer/phone which leads to less active throat muscles or possible opposite overactive. Tried stretching it?
