Stubborn uti

hi I have been on antibiotics for a really painful UTI. Doctor doesn't think I'm on the right meds and have to go back. I have weird symptoms that are worse on some days than others. I feel a hot burning pain in my urethra-vaginal area pretty much all the time. Sometimes my urine just feels hot or burning, other times I get a wicked razor blade pain. I felt much much better yesterday and way worse today. I had wondered about vaginitis because I also have itching which is not on the UTI list. I've never had a long term symptomatic UTI in my life. I've had symptoms begin that go away in 48 hours. Nothing ever like this. It's miserable and it hurts more because I pee more when I drink a lot of water. I'm so frustrated.
Random question in case meds don't work. how long do UTI symptoms last without treatment? I'm pretty sure I've had UTI's that resolved on their own but never for this long (2 weeks - on meds for 3 days because I thought it was a yeast infection at first. )
thank you 😃

With Meds UTI should have been much released within 3 days. If not, you may have something else that caused UTI. For example, kidney stones and vaginitis could cause UTI , but they cannot be cleared off by antibiotics. Do ultrasound for kidneys and bladder if it is purely UTI.

I would put every mortal thing in writing or emails. If you do not think things are going as they should say so in a nice way but be positive as doctors are re your medical notes because it is a hell of a job rectifying wrong notes made by doctors in error. They will stick to what they say
even if what they have written down on your notes is wrong.

You don't say if the doc has cultured your urine sample. It's essential that, rather than guessing, they find out what is causing your problem and give the appropriate treatment.
I agree with Izhan that 6 days of meds should have produced a result and I also agree with Mickelmus that you should make a note of everything that is said and prescribed to you. So many people post on here saying that they've been on "antibiotics" without saying which antibiotic. There is a huge difference between them and they are sometimes spilt into first, second and third defence categories. Different bugs respond to different antibiotics which is why it's so important that a culture is made before moving on to more serious treatments.
Don't forget that you should take probiotics whenever you have to take an antibiotic (as your good bugs will be killed off along with the bad).
In my experience an early hint of a UTI can be resolved at home with plenty of fluids especially if they make the urine acidic (i.e. with Vit C) but be wary of sugary drinks. Bugs like sugary urine but hate acidic urine. The level of pain you describe makes it sound like you are beyond resolving this yourself. Get help - but get a culture done.
