Submanbular gland removal 5 weeks on

Hi my submanbular gland was removed 5 weeks ago but I am still swelling up when I eat and drink which is very painful.  I have been back to the consultant who removed it but he does not know why it is still swelling.  I have been given antibiotic for 1 week whilst I wait for ultra sound.  Has anyone got any idea why it is still swelling when eat and drink?  Any advice I would appreciate

Hi Dustyday. If you had your gland removed because of a stone it could be that the stone is still there. I had my submandibular gland removed over two years ago but the stone stayed stuck in a duct and I had another couple of infections before the stone eventually came out. It's ok now though the area still gets sore occasionally and my lip isn't yet quite back to normal. Hope that helps. J.

Thanks Julie for replying that sounds right to me I think they have removed only part of the gland or they have taken the wrong gland out. It now swells instantly I wake up and will subside slightly then when I eat or drink swells a lot so I am in pain now since I had it done. I am taking antibiotics now I am on 3rd day but no realease from pain yet. They did not mention that they found a stone just s lot of inflammation so the stone could be still there. Any other advice I would appreciate

Hi Ruth I am still struggling with swelling and pain when I eat and drink and still pacing the floor in the early hours when pain killers ware off.  I am having a ultra sound on Friday then see consultant on the 16th to be honest I am in more pain and swelling than when I first went I am hoping I will get some answers when I see the consultant because he insist the gland has gone.  I am also very sensitive along the jaw line and feels as if I have a numbing injection.  I have finished antibiotic's but I really do not think I have an infection because if I go without food and drinks I am not in pain but you can only do that for so long.

      I will keep you posted

      Morning Ruth

Did the hospital give you anticeptic mouth wash?  I think they are suppose to give you when you leave hospital I got the mouth wash but no antibiotic's I do not feel as if I have an infection just seems as if they have either left stone in or part of the gland .

I am still very sensitive along the jaw line like a burning pain cannot bare anything touching it.  Roll on Friday

Hello Dustyday, I cama upon your post by searching what is happening to me. I had my submandibular gland operated both intraorally, because I had a cyst where a previous operation failed, and externally, 8 days ago. I have great pain and swelling after meals (mashed potatos and oatmilk). It feels as if saliva is accumulated in the space where the gland used to be. I have an appointment in 3 days but I am afraid my doctors do not have an answer. How are you, I hope that you are now very well.
