Subtalar Fusion at 12 weeks

Hi.. Would be great if could get a little advise if possible.

So I'm at the 12 week post op stage. I'm weight bearing but have lots of pain and weakness in the ankle tendons. I'm desperately trying to get myself back to normal walking through exercise on the ankle.

Is it good to keep walking and stretching or still need plenty of rest in between ?

Thanks Raoul

i have had two subtalar fusions - one on each ankle. Like you, I had the weakness and pain.

I can tell you that if you follow all post op instructions, it will get better. It will take about a year or so to truly feel strength come back, but you will get there.

Just keep walking every day and you will be back to it in no time. I will say that you will probably always have pain at times, but it should be mounds better than before

Thanks for your reply.. I use to be a big walker and I'm hoping I'll get back my normal stride with hopefully no limp.

I can walk very slowly with no limp but as soon as speedup things are not good.

Ive been going beyond what the physio recommenced to do strengthing wise.. but notice i have more pain so im unsure if thats better in the long run for building strength or more rest.

I really didnt think thisn op would throw me out this much.

Hi, I would make an appointment with your surgeon, same happened to me, my operation was Mar 27, got cast off Apr 30 started ohysio next day, it was still hurting to walk so 2 weeks ago had CT scan and turns out the bone at the back of the ankle is still completely broken, so back to no weight bearing. Surgeon said at 12 weeks you should be walking normal with no pain, just swelling

Thanks for your reply.. Im sorry to hear you're still having problems. I have got another appointment booked soon so hopefully I'll have another xray and see where things are.

I cant seem to walk with my normal stride.. Was hoping to much more normal by now.

    Hi

keep walking through discomfort but not through pain thats what my PT said . if very painful rest more and take things at a slower pace . Swimming and cycling helped me as there non weight bearing exercise . ive done everything to the book with my injury and ankle surgery however now 8 months and still not fully recovered . Good Luck and be patient and kind to yourself
