Does anyone have any positive stories/ success stories about Fluoxetine?

It's been a tough few weeks and I'm getting worried that the medication isn't working so well.

I've had a lot of side effects: nausea, lost weight, vomited, heightened anxiety, heart palpitations, sweating, hot flashes, insomnia and felt so restless. I've also felt rather closed off, I rarely go outside and spend most of my time at home, i've called in sick a few times from work as well.

Has anyone else had these sort of symptoms when on fluoxetine? How long did it take for the side effects to go away? Were you able to put weight back on?

I took fluoxetine back in 2013 and it really helped then, I stopped taking it around 2016 and changed to mirtazapine. But after a near anxiety relapse I tried Sertraline (did not help at all). So now i've been put back onto fluoxetine.

Has anyone been on fluoxetine more than once as well?

Hi Robert ... yep me lol.. Iv been on mirt, which was total crap for me with nitemares, I’m on 60 mg Prozac , and been nearly 8mth, and I feel at my best other then the menopause which I’m fighting lol...

it wasn’t untill around 12 weeks when Prozac started to kick in better, and the side effects subsided... but that’s me, not every one is the same..

If you’ve been on this med b4 then you know it works for you? Am I right? If so sorry to say it’s time you need on your side, all the symptoms you say you’ve got, I had when I was on 20mg Prozac, so I decided to go up to 40 and hope it sorts it self out, as really I had nothing to loose, stay the way I were😏 try another med😫or go up on Prozac so I stuck it out, as I wanted to feel better or some what better lol..

and wow it worked, i was on here just after 6 days on Prozac saying I don’t think I can go on any more, and will this med work, and I was told stick with it as all will be good, so i did, I’m out of the black hole, and the symptoms as well... I’m not saying every single day is perfect ( I wish ) odd days I feel fed up, but I know it won’t last and I’ll be back to my old self soon... so for ME it works, take care 🤗x

      Thanks for your reply,

Fluoxetine was incredibly effective for me back in the day, it really lifted my constant anxiety. I was able to go out, eat normally and just enjoy life. Back then I can't remember much about the side effects, I know it made me rather groggy for a small amount of time.

I'm just hoping it works the second time round, I've read a lot of stories about people taking fluoxetine for a second time and it works for them.

People keep saying I need to stick it out, I'm just feeling so irritated at the moment. I want it to work so I can get on with my life again. x

      Hi Robert,

Please try to hang in there.  I’m at week 7 and finally starting to see a definite change in depression and anxiety.  I still have some side effects, but I finally definitely notice changes.  It has been an awful 7 weeks to say the least.  The Dr told me to hang in there, and it is definitely getting better.  I just try to keep busy, that is the best thing you can do.   If you can exercise or walk the anxiety off, that’s what I do to.  My appetite has been off and on, and nausea, dizziness, etc.  also.  I do remember 20 years ago when I did this before it took a few months, like 12 weeks before I was stable, so please don’t give up on it.

      Hi Stacey,

I'm trying to, a lot of the time I keep overthinking about a lot of things: my health, weight, if I will get better or not. I think the over anxiety and panic are side effects, I didn't feel this bad before I took the medication. My appetite keeps fluctuating, I seem to be vomiting more frequently though (which I am concerned about). I've been distracting myself with videogames and films, i've found it difficult to leave the house lately. I hope that passes too.

My family, friends and doctor have reassured me that these are just side effects and that they will pass. I keep trying to hold onto that.

I didn’t feel that bad before either.  It makes you feel terrible for like 6 weeks, then it does start working.  I really think because you are getting bad side effects, that is a great sign it will help.

I will never go off one again once I get stabilized.

It's so strange, a lot of people have been saying to me that my bad side effects are a sign of an effective recovery. I hope it does help, when I took fluoxetine years ago it never affected me this much.

Yes I think it’s changing things in your brain, if you are having the awful side effects.  My Dr said that too.  Try to keep busy somehow, I know it’s very hard.

Iv lost three stone the irony is that I stopped taking my meds to loose weight, I ended up nearly losing my life! Iv done this journey before, less side effects last time but I’m hoping for the same wonderful result as last time, actually wanting to live.

In 35 days in now and we can get through this together!

I’d love to say yes because I want you to know it’s ok, but no not yet. I have horrible insomnia, morning anxiety, still losing weight, nausea and I feel like Iv been hit by a ten tonne weight! However I know I will feel better I just have to ride this bit out. Of course there are times I think I can’t do this anymore but then I remember how far Iv come since my break down in 2014 and think ‘yes you bloody can, you fought that and won now start fighting!’
