I have now been on 10mg Citalopram for 2 weeks, have to higher the dose to 20mg at the weekend, at the moment I am not feeling too good, hightened anxiety which the GP told me to expect, only sleeping a couple of hours a night and tummy upsets, I would love to hear other people's experiences with this drug as I am not sure whether to pack it in or carry on, thank you.

I have been taking citalopram for the past 6 years starting with 20 then 40 then 20 and 10 again for the last year. I stopped taking it abruptly(after 6 yrs). For the first month felt nothing except dizziness, but after a month started feeling anxious , having panick attacks and eventually depression. I was sooooo fed up with life and had no motivation. Every sigle hour of living was an struggle. I woukd ask myself what is the point of living along many other odd feelings. After 2 weeks feeling this way i couldnt tolerate and saw my GP to get back on citalopram again. He started me on 20m but the first day was such a horrible feeling and vad anxiety that i decided to halve the dose for a few days. After about a week i went back on 20m. Now it has been under 4 weeks since the start. I feel improved but not fully. The anxiety and panick attacks have considerably reduced but the depression is still there. I am still very hopeless and not joyful. I will see my gp in a week to up the dose maybe, as i had citalopram before and it worked perfectly for 6 years.

When I started Citalopram just over a year ago I read a blog just like this and it was a huge comfort to me knowing others are going through the same thing.  My story was that I was happy and relaxed one day and the next day had my first ever anxiety attack in the shower. It came out of the blue. I could hardly breathe and had to turn the shower on cold to shock my body out of it. This happened for a few more days until I went to the docs in a dreadful state and she prescribed me Citalopram 20mg.  The first week I had to just lie on the couch and read (Clive Cussler books were my distraction).  I was light headed, headachy, sweaty, not sleeping, had palpitations, couldn't eat and had occasional dark thoughts. I would advise anyone who starts this drug to have at least a few days off while your body adjusts. It is not pleasant but if you work your way through it it is fantastic.  After almost two weeks I felt my normal self again.  I used to take the drug in the morning but had palpitations at night, so now I take it at night and it is perfect.

I have not felt anxious for a year now. Funny enough I did feel very slightly anxious whenever I took a shower as that was where it all started but felt fine after about six months - I just got out quick! I used to be nervous driving on long road trips and now I feel great about it and enjoy it.  Funny enough I had a phobia of spiders and now am not so scared of them!  I feel happy and relaxed and can't say enough positive things.  Bear with the side effects for a week... work your way though it and hopefully it will work for you too.

      Lisa,

Thanks for your encouraging message. How long did it actually take for you to feel the full benefits of citalopram?

Hi there, I think it probably took a couple of months to not have any slight side effects (palpitations, feeling tired, the odd brain zap etc) but to be honest after 2-3 weeks I felt pretty fantastic!

Hey guys... I have been suffering with an anxiety and depression (stemming from health anxiety). Tried many antidepressants with only paxil really working and effexor partially working. Unfortunately third time around on paxil things didn't work out the same.

I'm exactly 4 weeks into citalopram (first week 10mg and 20mg since then)

Motivation is hard to come by, I'm constantly fatigued and have an all day heightened anxiety since beginning the treatment.

I understand that These things take time and Hopefully I turn a corner soon. The waiting game is the Hardest because you just want to feel as close to your old self as possible..

Anyone at a similar time stage as me? How are previous posters feeling now? It's always good to have support and hear successes!

It took about 4-5 months that I started seeing some good signs.  You must be patient and confident.  I am off the medicine now and fully recovered.  You will too.  It is not a big deal.
