Sudden Bicep pain after rotator cuff and bicep repair

I am 6 weeks post rotator cuff/SAD/bicep tenodesis. Everything was going normal until today at 6 weeks when I was allowed to remove my sling. I slept fine and woke up with no pain. I got up, happily removed sling, went to bathroom, pulled up my pants and went to adjust pants by slightly reaching behind and got a stabbing, knifelike, cramping in my biceps. I went to lie in bed, struggled to put the sling back on...started walking to kitchen and the bicep started stabbing and cramping again. I almost passed out from the pain. I have called my Ortho (he was in surgery today) and sent e mail to my PT for advice and have not heard from either of them. I can do pendulums without pain and the shoulder flexion exercise carefully, but any bicep movement and it starts to cramp and stab at me. I am now scared that my arm will never get better and don't know how this good go from good to bad so quickly. Has this ever happened to anyone? I hope I hear back from my Dr tomorrow. I am really worried.

Greetings to this group! Not that I'm happy that we are all experiencing some degree of pain, but there is a great deal of comfort knowing I fit right in with this "normal" post-surgery discomfort. My surgery: Right shoulder rotator cuff repair of the subscapularis and supraspinatus, subacromial decompression and extensive debridement of the labrum and biceps stump. I am an active 69 yr old woman looking forward to climbing into my kayak again! I am 8 weeks post-op, out of the sling as of 2 weeks ago and have had 6 sessions with my PT, going twice a week. I am following my physical therapist's program to the T and I do my home exercises religiously! This recovery is a test of patience! I have broken a hip, birthed 3 children (sans drugs), and experienced kidney stones twice but THIS surgery wins the most pain award. . . I agree with those of you that question "normal" pain vs. "what could have gone wrong pain??" With the help of this blog, I think I'm in the normal category. Oddly enough, my sleeping habits have improved since living as a "couch potato" in my recliner (I haven't said that out loud to my husband..) I think the chronic, day in day out pulling and stretching at just below the shoulder, sometimes extending down through the bicep is getting old but, I guess goes with the recovery process. I find if I stand still, the discomfort is greater than when I am walking. Adjusting my posture can help, too. I walk everyday, going about 2.5 miles~ some days I can do the whole thing without slinging my arm and there are days when the pain calls for slinging...(I carry a very simple sling with me) There are days where the bicep pain is greater than the shoulder pain -contingent on usage. Both the surgeon and PT say "use the arm". WIth that instruction comes the need to self-police activities based on pain level. I'm also told to "challenge myself"...A fine line exists between the challenge and the over-doing it. Before my home exercises, I heat my shoulder with a heating pad and afterwards, I ice and advil up..I can only hope that since I'm following the expert's advice that the stretching, pulling and sometimes movement from inside (like rubbing or relocation of tendons? no pain but it sure feels weird..)is part of the process and will eventually subside. My PT says there is no rushing this recovery~doing too much too soon will result in setbacks..Thanks to you all for your reassuring posts! I hope that this one will be helpful to the "newbies", too! Happy healing!

Hello all, I am 5 weeks out from Rotator Cuff Surgery. Full tear, bicep tendonesis, bone spur shave etc. One issue I haven't seen listed on this thread is skin pain and sensitivity to touch on the soft skin on the underside of my bicep. I am assuming it is nerve pain? I also have an area on the skin of my bicep that is numb. About 1.5" in diameter. Has anyone else experienced this?

i am in the same situation. i am seven weeks post op..i started my PT at two weeks. the first stage is stretching. i did very well and got my arm to 110 degrees. a week ago I went to stage two, which is getting mt strength back. i was doing good until it came to the bicept. OMG I am still in pain.i am three days a week. i almost did not go today but don't want to lose what I have. My PT started doing laser on the biceps. i cant pick up my purse or anything else even my coffee cup. so keep me updated on yours.
