Sudden hip pain

Hiya, I had a right hip replacement 02/05/15. Everything has gone really well and was using 1 crutch indoors but still 2 outside within 3 weeks. I have been lucky and not really had a lot of pain just been uncomfortable. Yesterday morning I did the exercises and went for a walk. During the walk my leg became really uncomfortable and I was really tired when I got home. Within two hours I had really bad pain and could barely move. The pain was in my lower back top of leg and around the wound area. I am now back to 2 crutches indoors. I can put my right foot to the ground with no pain. It's just painful when I try to walk. I was worried that I might have dislocated the hip but I understand that I wouldn't be able to walk at all and the pain would be unbearable. Has anyone else experienced what I have described. Im now upset as I seem to be back to square one. Be grateful for any answers.

Hi Joyce - you are only three weeks - perhaps you have been trying to do too much too soon. I know everyone wants to stop using crutches as soon as possible me included but from what I understand they support your muscles allowing them to heal and help you not to limp as limping causes stresses on muscles and will slow down the healing. I tried a few unaided steps between weeks 3 and 4 and regretted it - now I use 1 crutch inside - I'm 4 and a half weeks and I use 2 outside - I walk much better, put less weight on the crutches. I am still tired after a walk though. I try to do half to three quarters of a mile and the last couple of hundred yards are tiring. I have learnt to be patient and am waiting now for my body to tell me when it is ready to do more.

The muscles do take longer than you think to get better. Try not to worry and take it a bit easier. I would see a doctor though if you are getting severe pain and it does not improve.

    Good luck.

    Hi Joyce

Sounds like you've done too much I did a very similar thing 3 weeks down the line and I could hardly walk for about three days after, if you feel like you've done some damage its worth talking to your Dr or physio but it sounds like you've just over excerted yourself. Complete rest for a few days then start again, if no better back to gp or physio, I'm 8 months post op and I'm fine now so there is light at the end of the tunnel, good luck

Hi Joyce, I agree I just think you maybe did one step too far, because sometimes I think thats all it takes.  I am 6 weeks post op and did far too much on Saturday, felt so much pain on Sunday that I had to rest all day.  Think its our bodies reminding us to not overdo things.

Take care and hope you feel better soon.

Hi Joyce,  I think the others here are right you. May have over done things, I did exactly the same and ended up with a discolation.  Rest as much as you can in the next couple of days & do the bare minimum.  I felt I was capable of climbing a mountain at 2 weeks!! I'm not very proud of myself now!  I felt like a prize prat!! I'm now 7 weeks prior to all that now but, in no way am I ready to be doing more or walking more, I still use 1 stick around the house & as for going out I've only been out of the hous 3 times in 7 weeks, & 2 of those were by car.  Just rest as much as you can I wouldn't wish this on my worst enemy.  Take Care.
