Sudden intense pain near big toe

For a few months I've occasionally had a really dull pain along the side of my left big toe. It's so dull that I can't pinpoint exactly where it comes from, and it never affected my life in anyway. I had a GP check it out a few weeks ago, just to be on the safe side, but at the time of seeing her, there was no pain and she didn't seem concerned at all. I've not experienced it at all really since then...

Went to bed a couple of nights ago, with no pain or anything, but woke in the morning and could feel a nagging ache around my big toe, slightly different from before and more intense. I felt and prodded around the area and the pain is very localised to the point shown in the pic linked here.

It's generally more uncomfortable than painful but if I apply fingertip pressure to that point the pain is intense, and feels generally similar to a broken bone.

It's not bothering me too much when I'm inactive but it's very close to the sole of my foot, so I can't really put weight on it at the moment without getting that intense pain.

Any ideas?

Thanks
