Sudden neck and upper back pain

Posted , 4 users are following.

I have been on setraline for about 11 days, one week on 25mg and 4 days on 37.5 I'm slowly increasing it till I get to 50mg.

I have suddenly started experiencing really horrible dull achy neck pain particularly at the back and radiating at the back of my head and across my shoulders and upper back.its awful, I am aware I have been clenching my jaw tighter than usual since starting the meds (I used to grind my teeth at night and have a mouth guard) I looked online and saw an article on sertraline that said involuntary clenching the jaw was a side effect and in turn this can tense your muscles up leading to pain in the neck....was wondering if anyone else has this experience as it's really worrying sad

I get muscle aches all over from the med. It has gotten alot better with time. It is one of the side effects but it works great just gotta hang in there. I am starting to feel like myself again and I am on week 7. I never thought I was gonna get better and I stuck it out and so glad I did. You can do it, hope this helps you. 🤞🤞

Hi, I had a mouth guard before taking sertraline to. I used to grind my teeth in the night. I was on sertraline 3-4 years ago and again now. I’m on week 2 of 150mg. Jaw clenching is doing my head in !

I remember before it took a while to settle down. It was so bad my neck was stiff and my ears and face were hurting which gave me headaches to.

Stick with it, it will get better. Take paracetamol until it passes x

Thanks guys that was really helpfulsmile

I was hoping maybe I had slept on the wrong side and it would be a one off but it could be a side effect as you both said....hopefully it will pass x

    Hi john,

    Are you on 50mg?

Sorry to hear you are experiencing all these aches too, hopefully it will die down...I actually haven't had any more pain since posting but o have increased anxiety and restlessness, almost as if I have nervous butterflies😑
