Sudden onset Cataracts

My cataract symptoms came on quite suddenly. i think it was after my friend's brother made us smoothies with whole cherries (including the pits) . ... he said he wasn't aware that the pits contained cyanide. He threw two handfuls in the blender and my friend and I drank the whole pitcher. Has anyone heard of cyanide causing cataracts?? Yes, the man felt awful and thought he killed us....

I was all set to say this sounds like nonsense, but Google "cyanide-induced cataractogenesis".

i think that would be rare.
But some cataracts develop super quickly. i noticed within weeks after getting new glasses.
Have you ever used steriods orally or in creams (ie eczema)? Turns out that is what caused mine

I found an older study from 2004 that based on study using rabbits that there may be some connection between cyanide ingestion and cataract. The study compared rabbits fed a normal diet to another group that got 400 ppm cyanide in their diet over an extended period of time. Not sure how that compares to the exposure of eating a few cherry pits on one occasion. I found another article which said you had to eat a lot of cherry pits well ground up to get any kind of significant exposure that would cause ill effects. In any case here is the title of the study with the rabbits.

Correlation between cyanide-induced decreases in ocular Ca2+-ATPase and lenticular opacification NP Okoliea and K Audua
This said, it seems the most common exposure to cyanide is cigarette smoke.

Interesting! There were approximately 40 whole cherries in the blender. We each consumed 1/2 of the entire contents so about 20 cherries each, so more than a few. Probably not what caused my cataracts but curious what others thought. Thanks for the info!! From now on I'll make my own smoothies!

Hello,
I am 49 and developed fast growing cataracts last November at age 48. I could see one day and then a few days later could not! I did not eat cherries but suspect the eye cream I was using for a few months caused them. I had NO idea such cream could cause them and WISH I had been suitably warned by the optometrist and/or the pharmacist. No one in my family has ever had early cataracts. I am still upset about this as I feel that as consumers, we are really let down in this country with regard to drug warnings. I guess it could have been in the very small print somewhere in the literature that came with the tube, but who reads that (and maybe it wasn't, I don't know)? We need cigarette box type warnings for this type of thing!
Anyway, the people here are great. I am not sure I could have gotten through this time period last year without them. My advice, don't drive yourself crazy trying to figure out why you got them and focus your efforts on finding the best surgeon possible as if you're like me, it will be no time before you can see at all! Good luck to you 😃
