Sudden Pain after 7 months after THR

Hi all,

Just here for some reassurance really. I had a THR 7 months ago and apart from a few ups and downs it's been pretty good. I have had back issues too which has aggravated things but overall my progress has been pretty okay.

Last week I had to go into the office and due to covid I wanted to avoid the tube so I walked a lot (25 mins each way) and wasn't sitting very sensibly at work. This is the first time I'd done a whole week at work because I've been able to work from home since my operation. I've been walking 20 mins a day since the op and doing my hip exercises but I do get occasional back pain so not as much as I would like.

After that week I went to the shop in the evening and while walking I developed a sharp pain around the front and back of my thigh to the point that I could barely walk. This was 3 days ago and it's still painful, although a little less so. As I've been discharged by my surgeon I can't go to him, but will of course talk to my GP if symptoms persist. I'm using a stick at home just to take pressure off.

Is this common? I thought after 7 months I'd be 100% okay. Is it a concern or should I just rest and let nature take its course? I'm not too worried as I assume it's due to me overdoing it, but it would be nice to hear that others have experienced similar and recovered.

Many thanks for reading.

James

I am now 8 months post op and exactly the same thing happened to me last week - overdid the walking and then a sharp pain in my thigh, couldn't move - lasted a couple of days - bit scary - but now back to normal. Did read somewhere that nerves are reawakening which could have caused this. Frustrating because one doesn't expect this experience months after the op.

Thanks for your reply fran. My pain has been going on a few weeks now, I suspect related to my back where I also seem to have some arthritis. I'm planning on seeing my Physio again, hopefully she'll give me some reassurance. Too late to go back to surgeon as I'm now signed off. Fingers crossed!

      Hi James,

I'm 5 months and i've also experienced severe back pain. my hip still feels stiff and moderate pain at times. im still limping too on my operated side and been thinking of calling physio too. i also think yours could be because you are now in a different routine and moving/sitting differently at work which could be causing you the issues. let me know how you get on with your physio.
