Sudden ringing in my left ear along with a slight full feeling and pitch change

So about a week ago when going to sleep I noticed I had a constant ringing in my left ear, which I thought nothing of. It wasn't until the morning when the ringing hadn't gone that I started to worry. That was also when I noticed the fullness and slight hearing loss, so I instantly thought it was wax and tried a couple of days of ear drops to try and shift what ever was in there.

A week later and I'm still experiencing the same issues. I saw a doctor yesterday who informed me I had a slight external ear infection in the ear which he gave me drops for, as well as eustachian tube dysfunction. Apparently it was the eustachian tube dysfunction that was causing the ringing and fullness. At the time that made sense, as the ear just feels like I need to pop it, and it never pops when I hold my nose and try and blow, but today I was able to pop the left ear, though nothing changed.

Does popping the ear not give instant relief of ear ringing? It is really starting to worry me that I have some how caused permanent damage to my ear.

Three years since the original post and I've gone full circle which is slightly depressing...

Casually walking through my back garden when my left ear closed up leaving me with muffled hearing and fullness, though no change in my tinnitus at the time. My first thought was wax, so tried some olive oil which usually works. After a week of no improvement I went to see a doctor to make sure it was wax I was dealing with, annoyingly she said my ear was clear and I was probably battling eustachian tube dysfunction again. I saw the doctor about a week after the initial fullness and that day was when I felt a huge improvement in pressure and hearing, though it seems to have sent my tinnitus through the roof.

It took me around 6 months to see an improvement in my tinnitus the first time it occurred bringing it down to a point where I could only hear if it was very quiet and I went looking for it. It is now back to a point where I can hear it over everything. I have a low and mid tone in my left ear, and a very high pitched tone over both ears.

The doc gave me Nasonex which I've been told is a little stronger than the Beconase I have been using in the past, but I've not really felt any improvement in the week I've been using it. The thing is, my ear doesn't really feel like it needs to pop, though I can only pop my right ear.

I'm back on the decongestant, nasal spray, and steam inhalation cycle hoping that things will improve again.

Has anyone had anything like this return, or be left with a tinnitus 'spike' after a bout of ETD troubles? How do I even know if it is ETD I am dealing with?

As far as I know my tinnitus wasn't because of noise, and I can't pin point any specific event that caused it. Should I perhaps seek advice for things like neck tension or TMJ issues?

As much as I'd like to try and see another ENT it is probably going to take me a week to see a doctor and another couple of months before my referral goes through.

I got my ringing nearly 8 weeks ago.

The Dr said it takes 8 weeks to go normally it starts with a cold or virus that won't go. I find different positions of head movement makes it worse.

If you blow ears make sure your sitting down and nt to hard. I take 2 nurofen for the inflammation, then steam then try gently. I have got air in but if there is the mucus in the ear inner ear, then it will close up again, you can't force it and yes sometimes it drives me insane.

Try to massage back of ears from dent part pulling down gently to open the tubes. But be careful puffing air in ears too hard you will damage ear drums they are very fragile.

Yesterday, Wednesday July 14, 2017 with almost the exact symptoms ringing in ears, fullness, and the feeling that I needed to pop my left ear. Popping the ears did not help. After reading through 3 pages of comments I thought I was doomed. The feeling was similar to having earbuds in your ear without music. At about 3:30pm I thought to try putting one ear bud in the the left ear, and when I take them off it would go away much like when I had them on listening to music. After 3hrs of leaving the earbuds in, I took them off. Voila!!!!! Cured! No more swimmers ears! I am so glad I didn't have to the doctor and run through a barrage of tests without a cure.

Hi everyone, I was just looking at everyone's feedback regarding tinnitus and ringing or buzzing sound in ear.. I have had same problem 7 years ago and lasted for 3/4 months. After visiting many doctors and MRI scans nothing found out.. Doctors In Manchester told to me that it hasn't got cure which was hugely depressing to me ,, it is something you all can understand

however I just did not stop there as I wanted to get rid of this beacause I couldn't even focus on my work as most of the time I had buzzing sound in ear.

hence after looking at various remedies I did two things for about 3/4 weeks and I am writing them here--- I did 4 yoga named -- bhastrika, kaapal bhaati, anulom vilom and bharamri .. Initially all four of them for five min each in the morning later I increased time. Apart from this I did go to gym for 3/4 days doing largely cardio

after doing this I got rid of my tinnitus ..

i would recommend you all try this ,, I think in 90%cases it should work unless problem is very severe.this problem is about air congestion in air, so if you can manage air circulation in the ear ,,that's when it can be cured and yoga is something which regulates your internal air circulation with the help of cardio exercise

you can look for my  mentioned yoga name  in YouTube .

i wish you all get well soon ,,

    cheers

No, You don't have permanent damage to ears or hearing loss. Only one thing you should do at this time is to keep yourself stress-free so that it may not affect more on your ears.  Go for the complete solution by meeting an ENT specialist.

I suffered from this exact thing for 6 years and recently figured out what it is. I was misdiagnosed with hashimoto's thyroiditis and then meniere's disease I finally realized that I actually have severe allergies. I am undergoing immunotherapy (8 allergy shots a week), I take Allegra, Sudafed (pseudoephedrine) and flonase daily. I also find relief from my asthma inhalor (albuterol).

These are helping me immensely and I feel like I have a new lease on life.

It's also very important that when I have flair ups, I keep my nose very clear, try not to sniff, blow my nose as soon as it's a little bit full, and to drain my ears I find it helps to stick my tongue out and stretch it as much as I can. It seems to open up my eustachian tubes and help them drain. I hope this is helpful to anyone suffering from this maddening condition!!!

    Hi all,

I have had all of the same symptoms in both ears. It has been driving me crazy for about 3  weeks. So I tried acupuncture and lymphatic drainage massage (during the massage my ear that was the worse of the two actually was releasing quite a lot the fluid out of the ear and after acupuncture I felt cleared up from lots of conjestion)

I do have to go to more sessions to clear it up more but I have gotten the hearing back in my right ear. I have also stopped drinking milk to reduce conjestion and all of these things have helped greatly.

    Thanks

Thought I’d leave a quick post about my experience in case it’s helpful to anyone. About 6 weeks ago I went to lay down in bed and had a suddenly very loud ringing in my ear. I didn’t think much of it and expected it to subside within a few minutes like it usually does. However 4 hours later it had not gone and I was starting to get very anxious. I managed to fall asleep and in the morning the loud ringing noise had gone.

Over the next day or two I noticed that high frequency sounds were louder than usual and stood out more. For instance, the buzz on my TV was louder than what I was actually watching and birds chirping in a nearby tree sounded like they were right next to my head. This lasted for almost three weeks but has since subsided. During those weeks I also noticed that I had a low level hissing in my right ear that sounded like air seeping through something or like I’d put a shell up to my ear. It was not really noticeable during the day when it’s noisy but during the night it was very distracting and gave me some of the worst nights sleep of my life.

I started to notice that when I came out of the bath and water had got in my ear the noise was so much louder or if I put ear drops in my ear it would block up for a few hours and the noise was louder than when my ear unblocked a little. It was driving me insane and I started to think that I had to find ways of living with it. One particular night was really bad and after looking on Amazon I decided to buy a mini endoscopic ear camera to look in my ear. It arrived the next day and I could see that my good ear was clear but my bad ear had strange swirly like wax going all the way down my ear canal. I reluctantly booked a microsuction appointment for the next day hoping they could remove the wax but not thinking it would improve the hissing in my ear. After 6 weeks of dealing with this I am so happy and grateful to say the hissing is now gone after the microsuction removed all the gunk in my right ear. The doctor said it was mostly dead skin that had accumulated behind a plug of wax. This was causing the swirly buzzing noise and is apparently quite common.

I know tinnitus is caused by a variety of reasons and in some cases microsuction can actually make it worse but in my case it worked. When I was at a low point over these past 6 weeks, reading negative stories on forums like these made me feel a hundred times worse. So hoping my story will give someone hope if they have just started experiencing a ringing in the ear. Don’t despair it could be something as simple as ear wax.

      Hi Melissa,

glad your ringing has stopped that’s great news and sometimes that’s all it is, because the sound waves hit a barrier it vibrates back we get an imbalance feeling, and a crackerling noise, but if you get a cold and your blowing your noise you can get catarrh go into the Eustachian tubes then there’s a dysfunction and unless you ask how long I have had this I won’t say.

But I have has MRI scan awlful, cameras up my nose and in ears drops sprays, so not everyone will say it’s been easy for them. And to write on here about experiences helps others sometimes.

      Glad yours gone anyway.
