Sudden snoring that wakes me up

So about a month ago I got sick with a cold/flu type thing. Sore throat, sore ears, mild fever, phlegm, mild cough.  When I saw my doctor after being sick for maybe ten or so days she prescribed a nasal decongestant spray, which I used for about three or four days and was then prescribed Nasonex.  I felt and sounded congested to others but didn’t have a runny or overly stuffy nose.  Anyway, I started snoring around when I got sick. It’s not particularly loud but maybe because I’m a light sleeper it would sometimes wake me up as I was dozing off. It’s definitely coming from my nose, not my mouth. Anyway I’ve been feeling mostly better for like two weeks and this noise is still occurring. It still wakes me up sometimes and I find it hard to go back to sleep, it’s frustrating and upsetting.  I sleep on my side, I don’t drink or smoke and I’m not fat. I’ve only ever snored a few times in my life before and I was sick then too. I’m assuming being sick kickstarted the snoring but not sure why it’s still happening now I’m better? I can breathe through my nose ok when I’m awake. Also not sure why it wakes me up when most things I read online tell me I shouldn’t be hearing it. Confused and tired, any advice would be appreciated.

Your doctor should also be kind enough to suggest a sleep study to test for sleep Apnea.  If not, you might want to consider another doctor.  After you've done a sleep study you can also order breathing devices which hopefully you won't need.

Alternatively, there are eastern approaches too.  Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), recognises snoring and even has it grouped under four distinct patterns, and has appropriate treatments and suggestions of the best foods to eat and avoid.

Indian ayurvedic medicine has a similar approach as well as alternative nostril breathing exercises.  You can also massage up and down the base of the nose on either side to improve the energy channel and your breathing.

Also examine your diet.  Foods which are rich, greasy, and generally heavily processed will be more likely to aggravate snoring.  Conversely, you might consider eating more vegetables and well-cooked meat and fish instead, which do not create impurities which are considered a factor in snoring in TCM.
