Sudden weight gain - inactivity?

Posted , 10 users are following.

Hi nice group,

Just under two weeks post op and aslight shock today: my weight is usually 11st - 7lbs, and today was 12st - 1.5 lbs, a gain of 8lbs over these two weeks, suppose cos of inactivity? Was not expecting this, and carrying excess weight will slow me down.

Now I know I can work on it, but rather unexpected!

    Hi there

That sounds a lot in 2 weeks! But we're all different. I have put a couple of lbs on but was told that the prosthetic hip joint (mine's uncemented) weights about 2lbs extra than what was removed.

If you still are eating the same amount but Jess active it will pile on; I've tried to eat more veg and fruit (and take senakot every other day as inaction as def effected my digestion!).

You could always have a chT with your practice nurse?

I specifically asked my consultant if my prosthesis would weigh more, he said not as the large amount of bone they removed weighed more. I suppose it depends on the type of prosthesis. Mine is ceramic ball on ceramic socket.

    Hi Mic

I am 7 weeks post op now and have lost 5 lbs over the last month as I am more active every day so I'm sure you will lose the weight as you start to do more.

    good luck x

Hi,  know how you feel.  I am 8 days post op and already a few pounds to the dark side.  Everything so far is going well but boy is my appetite healthy !! I would like to say its caused by the energy used when exercising and waddling around on crutches.....but I do like my yum yums. So my chocs now under lock and key by my El Supremo (ie my wife who I am so grateful for in her help and patience)

It could also be down to some body's lurid retention ?. Any advice on this and also on post op exercise outdoors would be most grateful.

Good luck and best wishes to all. My thoughts with you.

3 weeks today since my op but think I might have lost a few of the pounds I put on pre op due to inactivity.  Don't have any scales so going by how clothes feel on me now!   Have and still am having a lot of pain so not feeling like eating or doing much apart from exercises and short walks as Meds making me sleep a lot.

    Mic,

I wouldn't worry too much about the weight. I went in for surgery as outpatient and weighed almost 10 pounds more 24 hours later when I got home! I was pretty shocked since you're not suppose to eat or drink for several hours before the surgery. I could barely get into my shorts! I guess it was from the anesthesia or fluids they put into you, not sure but it fell off in about a week or so.

    Speedy recovery,

Dear Mic, about a week after the surgery, I weighed myself and was 18 lbs heavier, but had lots of swelling in the operated leg. Once that was gone, I was back to my normal weight. The accumulation of fluids postop can alter your weight, so you need to allow for that when you are only 2 weeks out. I am now at 5 weeks and by 3 weeks was at the norm, hope your recovery goes well, the very best to you and yours, Susan

Thanks -and so everyone is different here too. Interesting the hip might weight 2lbs, and also fluid retention might have arole to play too. My wife thinks coming home to eat from boring hospital food is the main factor tho!

I understand completely mic. The batteries went on my scales around my op time so I haven't been able to weigh myself but when I did yesterday 6 weeks post op I've put on a stone !!!!! I was devastated. I am moving about a lot more now so hoping to lose it fairly quickly, I've got my sons wedding in a month and I need to get it down to get back into my dress I bought !!

As you start to move about more, you will probably lose the excess weight and perhaps you are eating a bit more, I did because I wasn't doing an awful lot during the first 4 weeks and my hubby was bringing me all these fattening things to eat, like a box of chocolates etc.  Also the swelling in my legs didn't help.  I am now back to my original weight now, so don't worry too much about it at the moment. Good luck.

    Hi mic,

I am 2 weeks post op today and although I haven't weighed myself I'm pretty sure I'm heavier, not least as I have legs like tree trunks with the swelling! I'm not too worried as once I'm back to full strength I know I will be very active and I will lose any extra weight.

Good luck with your continued recovery smile
