Suffered 4 years Severely, Is it Really IBS?

Hi my name is Coryn and I am on my Wits end..

I am 18 and spent the last 4 and a half years In and out of hospitals, Doctors, Specialists and I can't handle it no more I NEED to know that someone out there has the same issue As me.

It all started at about 15, I woke up one morning And I felt like my Kidney or Appendix  was exploding Inside of me it was horrible. My nan rushed me to the GP where I was told I had indigestion and he gave me some gaviscon and told me to take it till I felt better. about 2-3 weeks later I was still In awful pain so again I went back to the doctor where I was then told that I was Consitpated, Again I got some medicine thrown at me and I walked away, I took this for 4 weeks (4 WEEKS!) and nothing happened.

So again I went back this time a little more frustrated, This is when I was told I had IBS, I trusted the doctors and got given more medicine and went home I took this for 2 months, Again Nothing happened So this time I went back I was defo annoyed.

This is when they stopped helping me And Everything went downhill, For the next year I couldn't get off the sofa I spent my days watching Netflix, I changed my Diet, Ate more Fibre, Drank more water done everything I could yet still nothing!

I soon became bed ridden and at 16 I met a guy, I would stay at his place and I would be so Ill he would look after me the amount of A&E trips we did was unreal.

I now live with him and I am now 18, I am still going through these problems And I now go to the gym 3 times a week, Do yoga, Pilates Each majorly healthy, Good fibre amounts and drink the right amount of water I should, I Take two sennas at night, And do as much As I physically can.

But again still sick, I had a colonoscopy a few months ago they found nothing worrying I was also meant to have an Endoscopy but I had a major panic attack and couldn't do that!

I am doing a stool sample soon But Its destroying me, I now have depression and I have anxiety and I know it is from this So that wont help either, The thing Is I am no longer constipated I am going tot hr toilet 2-4 times a day and it is not normal Either It is Very soft, watery stools, It has mucus sometimes and sometimes even has blood.

The worst of it is the fact that I constantly feel Nausea And that makes me feel so poop...

Anyone else like this, There is more to it but I dont want to bore you !

    Hello Coryn

You have had a rough time, and just to let you know you are not alone. There are many people like you, that simply have to find what does and does not work for them.

I assume you have been referred to a Gastroenterologist by a GP. I also assume you have had a Colonscopy to check you out, and tested you for more serious conditions. If not, insist on it.

If they have all turned up negative, then it is down to IBS, which essentially means that everything else has been ruled out!

A couple of things to do after that, do a food diary, literally write down what you eat, as much detail as you can, and then write down all the symptoms you have. This will enable you to try and identify what food is the trigger for you. You will have a few, classics being spices, onion, chili and garlic. Over a month, if you see a trend, then you can see what the trigger is.

Finally, and do this asap, change your diet to follow the FODMAP diet. This is a really recent scientifically proven diet that helps hugely with IBS control. You need to follow it, and the advice to follow this is being rolled out across the NHS.

Plenty of people are in your situaton, you are not alone at all, and to be honest, be comforted in the knowledge that there are people worse than you, who cannot for example excercise. But in the end, there is no magic pill, no one pill drug. You need to work on this yourself, and when you find what works for you, you will, I promise, be able to get on with life.

    Good luck.

I've experienced a lot of the symptoms your going through when I was the same age as you. I am now in my 30's and still suffer from ibs with severe constipation. I actually had a great handle on it from about 19 to 31 and now the problems seem to be coming back. One thing that used to help me a lot through the years with my constipation was flipping upside down. I know it sounds insane but it helps you to expell any trapped gas that is in the colon. For me it would also trigger a bowel movement most times also and relieve my anxiety. I had a doc tell me once that when the body isn't functioning normally, you will feel some sort of anxiety at times. I feel for what your going through as I'm going through the same,  but hang in there. Pray about it, there is definitely power in Jesus' name. I hope you find some relief.

Hi Coryn1996. This might help with your I.B.S issues. I make a cup of black tea, 6 cloves (Cloves have anti-fungal effect, antibacterial, antispeptic, analgesic)and a teasp of Cinnamon and honey 1tbls.  It helps with bloating, gas, loose B.Ms,and pain, will help add good bactiria to your intestines. Clove/ Cinnamon/honey have been used in ancient times.  You can Google them.  Best of Luckrazz

Have your ever traveled in Asia perhaps?  I am wondering if you have also ruled out any parasites and infections.  Yeast is also an issue with some people who have IBS and other colon issues.  Take a look at BREAKING THE VICIOUS CYCLE by Elaine Gottschall.  Google this and you will find a great site that explains the connections between certain carbs, yeast and irritation of the lining of the colon.  While it might not completly cure the problem, it might help some.  Ever hear of the Atkins diet?  That is one where carbs are restricted to loose weight and folks found it helped colon issues so that is where they got the idea!

    Hi coryn

I see many similarities between us.

I to just woke up one morning with agonising pain, I was rushed to AnE with suspected appendicitis, but I didn't have appendicitis. I was treated with antibiotics and sent home. The symptoms died down a little but 3 months later I ended up back in AnE I was told I had peritonitis. So I have laporoscopy, they cleaned my insides up and treated me with antibiotics.

Since then I still had stomach issues so I was diagnosed with post infective ibs another 8 months later. At this point I had a colonoscopy and endoscopy.

I have an endless list of stuff I can't eat, and I can't follow the FODMAP. I can't eat any raw veg, veg or fruit with seeds not even bananas kiwis or strawberries because of the seeds. No hard skins or things with beans in Or pulses. No nuts, not even almond milk. Large amounts of milk and protein make me sick. No processed or fried food. No white bread, rice or pasta. The 3 main things that kill me are tomatoes, sweetcorn and mushrooms.

I take alsorts of meds. I'm on amitriptaline all the time. In between I take colfac or buscopan sometimes to help with stomach spasms, omaprazole to stabilise my stomach and dompeidon

I don't have your average ibs symptoms either. I have stomach pain around my appendix area, stomach spasms, I'm sick alot, I don't have constipation or diarrhoea, I just go more often like 8 times a day when I'm really ill. I also get a lot of musuc in with my stools and occasionally blood. I try to do yoga but I haven't been able to go for 3 weeks as I'm having a really bad relapse. My doctor is putting me through all the tests again because she's worrid something has been missed.

I got sent gone from work again today for being sick. It really does feel like I've lost a lot of my self.  Your lucky you have a partner who supports you. I lost my last relationship, home and job because of it all xxxxx

Oh my God I am so sorry that you're going through this... But I can relate to you, I attend college 3 days a week It only started 3 weeks ago and my attendence has dropped to 95% and anythign lower then that I will get kicked out!

Im sorry you're alone in all this but I am sure the right guy will come along I mean nothing could get worse right ? alot of people are like "Omg its IBS youre not that sick" I don't think they realise how debilitating it is !

Yer I went through a pretty low time in my life, I have an amazing fella now who looks after me but doesn't make me feel ill or broken.

My attendance at work is dreadful. But I can't be sacked because I have a medical condition, that would be discrimination. I would have thought this would apply to college aswell, and there should be something they can do to support you.

I've just had another 2 days off. But I've been in a relapse for about a month now I think my body has just given up. Luckily ice hot a week off work now and Tuesday I'm getting some test results to see what can be done next. I've had all the tests I can have before but now my doctor feels that something isn't quite right again.

I have found it useful talking in here tho. I thought I was pretty much alone smile

Not glad that your similar to me, as I wouldn't wish this on anyone but it's good to talk smile

If your in a lot of pain and discomfort try asking your doctor about amitriptaline, look at the pros and cons tho. Personally I can't function with out it but it dose change your life style  xx

Hi i suffer terrible with my bowel for years i have had chronic constipation and every test they had! just lately been diagnosed with irritable bowel syndrome and lazy bowel syndrome which come under the same umbrella. The worst symptom i have is constipation episodes of not eating at all because i feel so sick. so in my opinion yes i think irritable bowel is very underated although its not serious the symptoms are horrendous.
