Suffering from glue ear AGAIN (I'm 17)

i had glue ear from when i was a little child, i think it developed soon after i was born.. i didn't learn to speak until i was 4 when i went to a playgroup when all the children spoke loudly. It wasn't even picked up that i had hearing problems until a hearing test at school in the winter showed i had problems, i went to the hospital every year for a hearing test but it was always scheduled in the summer until years later i had one in the winter and they found out i had only 40% hearing, the hospital said to wait until i grew out of it in which i got constant infections and ear aches.. I suffered greatly and not only that but i had trouble learning at school. I would get told off for daydreaming and not listening in lessons when it was because i couldn't hear them. My mother came in one day and told every teacher off for treating me badly when it wasn't my fault and they finally listened and tried to help me rather than telling me off. Having glue ear meant that to help i naturally learnt to read lips, this helped me with my learning even if people thought i was odd for staring at them.

I finally had an operation for grommits at the age of 8, it dramatically helped my hearing and i found i could hear things like the wind against the grass and trees and i never had a problem again. until now.

I am now 17 years old and last winter is started having dulled hearing and kept getting constant colds and viruses. i told my doctor and he tried giving me some de-congestant to clear my ears.

When that didn't work he referred me to the hospital and i have just been today and had a hearing test. the consultant who i had back when i was 8 told me i had glue ear yet again and instantly put me on the waiting list for having the operation again, i cant believe i'm going to have to go through this whole thing again after growing up with it. the consultant has also put me on some nasal spray that i have to use everyday to try to clear the tube but if it doesn't work i will have the operation in about three months time. Who's to say i wont just get it again later?

I'm sorry to hear about your repeated glue ear problems. My son is just about to have tubes in his ears for the 2nd time; he's 11 now, and can't hear again. The doc is removing his adenoid because it's big, and that can cause the eustachian tubes to be squashed and not work which causes the glue ear. He also has allergies which the doc thinks contribute to irritated swelling in that area closing off the tubes. Have you looked into those for yourself?

your situation is a little similar to mine. Although you seem to have had a more servere case of glue ear mine is more frequent. I've had 4 operations from ages 7-15 due to the reoccurence of glue ear and in the past couple of days it has come back once again, despite using a nasonex spray prescribed to me. Im 17 now and am going to see my doctor again tomorrow hopefully and i will probably be having my 5th operation for gromits soon sad . As you grow older glue ear is supposed to ease off, but i cant see it happening to be honest so now i feel like im going to have to have operations for gromits every 2yrs for the rest of my life!

sorry to hear about your experience and sorry i couldnt share a more positive experience :?
