hi all
ive seen a few people mentioning cutting sugar out of their diet to help with LS.
i wondered if anyone would share their experience of how its helped ?
is it ALL sugar (i.e natural sugar too ) or just added sugar ?
is there a specific name for this diet ? (apologies if silly questions !)
thank you c

Hello Wendy
I have mentioned sugar few diet in previous posts. I was already on a sugar free diet before getting LS (as part of a diet to control chronic fatigue) so I was more likely to notice any changes if or when I ate foods with sugar content. So I removed all sugar from my diet to start with and have very slowly reintroduced some small portions of berries (dark berries only) into my diet such as blueberries, blackberries). I notice if I eat any other types of sugar I get itchy and LS flares up.
Hope that helps.

i have been on AIP (auto immune protocol) for two weeks since i have two auto immune conditions- one is LS (yes it IS auto immune) and sjogrens syndrome. I dont eat ANY processed white or brown sugar, if i need a sweet ill have a little bit of fruit (berries) and use a tiny bit of coconut sugar or maple syrup. i still need some time to figure out if this is helping but so far i dont have ANY flare ups and i have a ton of energy. generally people love sugar and are trying to find any excuse to eat it, for me its a dangerous drug. i might feel the happiest in the world while eating it but i have horrible consequences including itching, gas, and sleep problems. if you want to do it right but not be extreme i suggest steering clear of desserts and having berries or limit to 2 fruits a day that are not tropical (mango, pineapple etc)- for me its crucial to steer clear of dairy and processed foods too. Some people with LS also have SIBO (you can google)- caused by too much build up of bad bacteria in the small intestine, causing brain fog, gas, bloating and sugar cravings. very often with sibo you are feeding your bad bacteria with the sugar that the bacteria craves. so maybe thats an incentive to reduce sugar.
one more note and ill report back later because i dont have enough info yet, is whether a high protein diet doesnt affect LS or makes LS worse. many people have done nutient dense vegan with good results. i personally need protein to function! sorry for going off topic.

Hi Wendy,
The problem with everyone staying away from sugar is that we are all so different in our metabolisms. What works for one person does not work for all While you or some may feel better w/o sugar, I or some others may feel worse. It's an individualized treatment issue. I agree we all eat too much sugar but not all of us react the same way. Are you avoiding processed foods? Carageenan? Preservatives, Dyes? Do you have another autoimmune problem right now ? I am onto the theory that same trigger for one autoimmune disease may trigger another. Like psoriasis. That's an AI skin disease. I just need to f ind more hours during the day to research it....
