sulfasalazine

Hi i am very new to any types of forums so hopefully i will work this out! I was put on sulfasalazine at the beginning of the year taking 1 aday, on the 7th day i had my hair hi lighted with the normal salon and dye that i have used for 13 years! That evening i became unwell with uncontrollable shaking, shivers and sickness. I stopped the meds and saw my GP who wasnt sure if it was the hair dye or sulfasalazine so told me to stop them for 1 week and try them again. So the following week i took 1 tablet and about 4 hrs later i was in terrible pain down both legs then my arms i was terribly sick and had to ring emergency drs? The next day i was bed ridden and had the drs out to me, all my joints had become inflamed and very sore! I had had a terrible allergic reaction to this medicine that my doctor had seen before. It took me 4 days to get somewhere normal again. Has this happened to anyone else? Thank you

Blimey you did have a bad reaction! I stopped taking mine two days ago, was just at the start of the third week so about to increase to 3 a day but have had a very severe bout of diarrhoea so now I dont know whether it was the pills or a bug. I am very wary about recommencing them because of the presence of blood too. I am feeling ao ill now and just dont know what to do. Have you been prescribed anything else?

Its scary hay sandy i am waiting to hear from the specialist as to what to do next but i am quiet apprehensive on any drug at the moment! But i know there are so many people that take this with no problem, its strange as i have never been allergic to anything in my life. Hope you feel better after the meds leave your blood. X

My partner rang the hospital and an RA nurse rang right back. She told me not to take anymore as it is very likely due to them and she will let my rheumy know and I also need to arrange a blood test.

good luck, I hope all works out well x

Good heavens diddy. What a terrible reaction. I have yet to see a Rheumatologist for the first time next month. I'm so worried about what they may suggest I take as I've heard so many awful things about most of these drugs.

Good luck at your appt and you never know they might agree with you and never have any problems, obviously all meds have a certain amount of side effects but mine was a very rare one! But im worried as to any medication at the moment but hopefully something will agree with me x

Hello diddy. I really do hope you get your medication sorted out. I suppose it's trial and error with all of these drugs. You never know how you will react until you've given it a try. Good luck and keep in touch.

You all are having such terrible reactions!  I have been on it and no reaction.  Since I just went on Remacade, they have taken me off that.  I'm so sorry you all are suffering so!
