Hi All! I have been reading about Auto Inmune Diseases and not mixing very well with sitting in the sunshine, that a 'flare up' can occur!!! Have I been reading rubbish, or us there some truth in the matter!! I'm off to the South of France in 5 weeks time and I usually like sitting in the baking heat !!! Oh dear please don't tell me my sun worshiping days are over!!!!! 🌞🌞🌞 xx

Hi Andrea, if that is true then it's news to me. However, conditions such as cold sores can definitely be triggered by too much sun. Regards christina

Too late my arms and legs are already brown.  Have been since April and the hot weather then.  I've had no ill effects but I do use cream so I don't get burnt or dry up!

It depends on the autoimmune disorder.

I live in northern Italy, have PMR and we get a fair bit of sun! It doesn't make me flare. In fact - I like it! I don't like excessive heat - but that means humid and over about 28C. Then I just sit in the shade. We were on Lake Garda a couple of weeks ago and it was 34C in the shade and I survived.

So yes, you might find heat hard work but it shouldn't cause a flare - it does in lupus and maybe other A/I disorders but not PMR that I know of. REmember though that pred may make you very sun-sensitive. Factor 50 at least! It does go back to normal - I now go brown again but I didn't for some time, just developed rosacaea on face and decolletee (or however you spell it).

With the incidence of skin cancer getting higher every year,

sitting in the sun brings its own risk.  I live in Florida and have

had several skin cancers removed.  I avoid the sun like the

    plague PMR or not.

Forgot to mention in my earlier post about skin cancer.

even if that doesn't happen.....Ladies your skin will

end up looking like leather and too much sun will make

you look years older than you really are.  It's not worth

it to have a tan for a few months.....

You can get factor 60 on prescription.  I always avoided the sun as I used to come out in rash - forgotten the name.

However when on Pred, I found that horrible itchy rash did not occur and it has not come back either since I stopped pred. cool

I think it has to do with folks who are temperature sensitive. I was a sun worshipper (a human iguana :D ) but now I can't sit in the sun at all.  sad  I miss it.

I discovered that sitting in the sun caused me to turn red with white spots sort of polka dots then after reading the script insert it said to avoid direct sunlight while on pred. This sun reaction had never happened before. Fortunately the spots faded when I got out of the sun.

My GP prescribed Factor 60.   Sometimes you just cannot avoid direct sunshine.  It was useful.
